Job description

Description:Data Scientist

Location: Murray, Utah
Work Arrangement: In-Office / Hybrid

About the Role

We're looking for a Data Scientist to join Bear River Mutual Insurance.

As a Data Scientist, you'll build and deploy predictive models that directly influence business decisions and outcomes. You'll partner closely with teams across underwriting, claims, information technology, and customer service to uncover opportunities where data can improve decision-making, strengthen performance, and create better experiences for our policyholders.

Success in this role isn't measured simply by building models, it's measured by the impact those models have on the business. From improving underwriting decisions to identifying fraud and strengthening customer retention, your work will help make Bear River Mutual smarter, more efficient, and better positioned for the future.

This position is based in Murray, Utah. At Bear River Mutual, we value in-person collaboration and believe some of our best ideas come from working together, building relationships, and learning from one another.

What You'll Be Responsible For
  • Build, validate, and deploy predictive models, including claim cost modeling, customer retention modeling, underwriting risk scoring, and fraud detection.
  • Explore new data sources and evaluate their potential value for modeling and business insights.
  • Monitor model performance and contribute to model governance and performance tracking practices.
  • Partner with underwriting, claims, information technology, and customer service teams to understand business challenges and identify data-driven solutions.
  • Present findings and recommendations in a way that's meaningful to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Perform ad hoc analyses to support strategic and operational business decisions.
  • Collaborate with the broader analytics team on cross-functional initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
Success in This Role

In this role, you'll:

  • Develop analytical solutions that improve business decisions and measurable outcomes.
  • Build trusted partnerships across departments by understanding business needs and delivering practical insights.
  • Communicate complex information in a way that helps others make informed decisions.
  • Continuously evaluate, refine, and improve predictive models to ensure they remain effective over time.
  • Contribute to a culture of collaboration, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
About You
  • You Put People First: You treat others with dignity and respect, build positive relationships, and communicate with professionalism and empathy.
  • You Stay Connected: You collaborate effectively, share information openly, and recognize the value of working together toward common goals.
  • You Are Accountable: You take ownership of your work, exercise sound judgment, and follow through on commitments. You can be counted on to do what you say you'll do.
  • You Deliver Service: You understand that your work ultimately supports our policyholders, business partners, and employees by helping improve decisions and outcomes.
  • You Value Relationships: You recognize that successful analytics begins with understanding people, not just data. You build trust by listening, communicating clearly, and partnering effectively across the organization.
  • You Care About Quality: You take pride in producing accurate, thoughtful work and understand that attention to detail leads to stronger outcomes.
  • You Balance Urgency with Judgment: You know when to move quickly and when to slow down, validate assumptions, and make thoughtful decisions.
  • You Embrace Continuous Improvement: You enjoy finding better ways to solve problems, improve processes, and create value through data.
  • You Are Adaptable: You remain open to change, new ideas, and evolving business needs while maintaining a focus on quality and results.
  • You Balance Experience with Curiosity: Whether you're bringing years of experience or building new expertise, you're committed to continuous learning, embracing new ideas, and adapting as technology, our industry, and our business evolve.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Actuarial Science, or another quantitative field.
  • Three or more years of experience building and deploying predictive models.
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and Git.
  • Strong understanding of statistical and machine learning principles.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in insurance, financial services, or another regulated industry.
  • Familiarity with model governance frameworks or risk management practices.
What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation with opportunities to participate in our performance-based bonus and profit-sharing programs
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus employer-funded Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions for eligible medical plans
  • Company-paid life insurance and long-term disability coverage
  • A 401(k) with company match and a company-sponsored pension plan to help support your long-term financial goals
  • Generous paid time off, company-paid holidays, and a floating holiday to support work-life balance
  • Education reimbursement for approved programs to support your professional growth
  • Employee discounts on Bear River Mutual personal insurance products
  • The opportunity to work with talented, dedicated professionals who are committed to serving our policyholders and supporting one another
  • A collaborative environment built on our core values of People First, Connected, Accountable, and Service
  • The stability and strength of an organization that has proudly served Utah families for more than a century

Why Bear River Mutual?

With fewer than 200 employees, every team member has the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. Here, your work is visible, your ideas matter, and your contributions help shape the future of our organization.

Our Values

Our values guide how we work, how we serve others, and how we make decisions every day.

  • People First: We treat every person with dignity and respect. We listen, communicate openly, and approach every interaction with professionalism, empathy, and care.
  • Connected: We work as one team. We collaborate across departments, share information openly, and recognize that our collective success is greater than any individual achievement.
  • Accountable: We do what we say we'll do. We take ownership of our work, act with integrity, and make thoughtful decisions that support our members, agents, and colleagues.
  • Service: We care for people. We strive to provide prompt, dependable support and create positive experiences in every interaction.
