What are alterations?

Alterations are adjustments or modifications made to clothing to improve its fit, style, or functionality. These changes can include hemming pants, taking in or letting out seams, shortening sleeves, or replacing zippers. Alteration specialists, often called tailors or seamstresses, use sewing skills to ensure garments fit clients properly and look their best. Alterations are commonly used for both new and existing clothing to extend their wear or update their style.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in alterations, and why are they important?

To thrive in alterations, you need strong sewing skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of garment construction, often supported by formal training or apprenticeships. Familiarity with industrial sewing machines, sergers, and pressing equipment, as well as pattern-making or tailoring certifications, is typically important. Building experience with different garment types and staying organized can help ensure high-quality results while maintaining customer satisfaction.
