JOB SUMMARY:

Under general direction, provide classroom and supervision of Fire Science courses within the Department of Public Service Education. Primary teaching area will be in Fire Science. Responsible for creating an innovative learning environment both inside and outside the classroom to inspire success and excellence in student learning. Instructional faculty members are also expected to adhere to professional standards and ethics.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares a syllabus for each lecture and lab course.
  • Grades all quizzes, tests, and written assignments; and enter grades in Canvas gradebook on a timely basis.
  • Assigns final grades.
  • Develops and maintains course management and internet shells.
  • Instructs assigned classes and laboratories.
  • Participates in the development of retention and core completion strategies.
  • Develops and maintains course management through the college's Learning Management system.
  • Maintains regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students.
  • Cooperates in Department budget preparation and in course planning and development.
  • Assists with Departmental projects and programs, including undergraduate research efforts.
  • Serve on at least one College committee/workgroup.
  • Develops and/or implements strategies to support students' retention, persistence, and program completion.
  • Completes all other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • Bachelor'sor Master's degreewithamajorinarelatedfield and FloridaCertifiedFireFighterandFloridaInstructor Certification 1, 2 or 3 required.
  • Ability to teach a minimum of 36 semester hours annually (required)
  • Certification as a Florida Firefighter or eligibility for certification.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of proven work experience as a firefighter.
  • Level III Fire Service Instructor, State of Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training, or eligibility for certification.
  • Proven track record of effective instruction in Fire Science with the ability to utilize contemporary technology.
  • Ability to function in an occupationally-oriented program requiring regular interfacing with students, and fire service agencies.
  • Willingness to apply technology and innovative approaches to the teaching of Fire Science is essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and occasionally carry items in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. Some lifting of computer and electronic equipment may be required. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. Indian River State College expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
