Job Summary: GDOT - Power BI Sr. Developer
About the Role:
Join the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) as a Power BI Sr. Developer and play a pivotal role in transforming enterprise data into actionable insights. This hybrid position based in Atlanta, GA, offers a dynamic work environment, the opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional teams, and exposure to large-scale, mission-critical data projects. The role is initially contracted through the fiscal year with strong potential for annual renewal and long-term growth.
Responsibilities:
- Architect, develop, and optimize Power BI semantic models using best-practice dimensional modeling (star schema, snowflake, dataflows, shared datasets)
- Build and maintain enterprise-grade datasets with relationships, hierarchies, calculation groups, and incremental refresh
- Implement and optimize advanced DAX measures, calculated columns, and tables for business logic, KPIs, and analytical insights
- Design, develop, and deploy visually compelling dashboards and reports utilizing Power BI visualization best practices
- Write efficient SQL queries, stored procedures, and views in both Oracle and SQL Server to support data pipelines and transformations
- Manage Power BI Service administration: workspaces, datasets, data gateways, refresh schedules, capacity utilization, security, and governance
- Collaborate with data engineers, DBAs, and business stakeholders to define data requirements, ensure data quality, and deliver scalable BI solutions
- Document data models, DAX logic, SQL scripts, and report specifications
- Support and guide self-service BI users, and participate in Agile or project-based workflows to continuously improve BI capabilities
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or related field (4 years)
- 5+ years of hands-on Power BI development experience
- Deep expertise in semantic modeling, advanced DAX, Power Query (M language), Power BI Desktop, and Power BI Service
- Proficient in SQL development within both Oracle and SQL Server environments
- Experienced with Power BI administration, RLS/OLS security, workspace governance, and capacity management
- Strong understanding of dimensional modeling and data architecture
- Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with Oracle Business Intelligence (OBIEE) Semantic model (RPD), interactive reports, and dashboards
- Familiarity with enterprise data governance frameworks
- Proven ability to work with large, complex data sets in multi-system environments
