Senior Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Associate (Chemist)

Intertek is searching for a Senior Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Associate (Chemist) to join our Assuris team in our Mississauga, Ontario office.  This is a fantastic opportunity to grow a versatile career in Chemical Regulatory Field!

The Senior Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Associate (Chemist) is responsible for:

What you'll do:

  • Critically review relevant information obtained via published and unpublished literature, from the client, from subcontracted testing laboratories and/or provided by project managers
  • Work on projects with greater complexity of issues.
  • Address concerns and questions of the client and senior project manager in relation to the material accumulated on the project.
  • Communicate with client for clarifications/queries in relation to the material accumulated on the project.
  • Prepare substantiation of confidentiality request reports
  • Apply chemical techniques and structures to assist with the analysis and development of project strategy
  • Exercise technical knowledge to assist with the design, execution and interpretation of project materials
  • Draw chemical structures to support project documentation and where possible train others to draw chemical structures
  • Provide chemical/technical expertise to projects for all business areas
  • Assist other business areas, as appropriate, e.g., EPA/PMRA, etc.
  • Assume responsibility for the quality (scientific accuracy, completeness, writing style of the initial draft) of work and the work of others who had a direct role in the project that you were responsible for.
  • Apply and develop read-across methodologies to predict toxicity, bioaccumulation, degradation, and other key properties of chemical substances.
  • Identify and justify suitable analogues for target substances using chemical structure, physicochemical properties, and mechanistic data.
  • Develop and document scientifically defensible read-across rationales for regulatory dossiers (e.g., REACH, CEPA, TSCA).
  • Use chem software tools and databases (e.g., OECD QSAR Toolbox, SciFinder, ECHA databases, etc) to support analogue selection and data interpretation.  
  • Review and validate chemical nomenclature for accuracy and compliance with CAS and/or IUPAC and regulatory standards.
  • Interpret and apply Masked Name Regulations to chemical substances for regulatory submissions.
  • Assist in reviewing and interpreting physical and chemical property data, analytical chemistry data, and chemical characterization information to support substance identity and regulatory assessments.
  • Apply stoichiometric calculations to support substance characterization.
  • Support senior chemist in preparing scientific information and technical reports.
  • Communicate with project managers to obtain technical information required for regulatory assessments.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and regulatory records.

        

What it takes to be successful in this role:

  • Degree in Science: chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, etc.
  • ~3- 5 years experience

Core Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry principles
  • Ability to process information, follow directions, create/edit reports with some guidance
  • Aptitude, knowledge and interest in regulatory scientific issues
  • Ability to multitask, work independently and effectively prioritize own work
  • Strong communications skills (oral and written) as a professional scientist.
  • Working knowledge of various word processing, database, spreadsheet, and graphic software packages
  • Strong integrating and motivating skills to meet more complex project schedules/deadlines
  • Demonstrated potential for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought
  • The following are assets:
    • Industry experience as a regulatory chemist role.  
    • Knowledgeable in chemical regulations as it pertains to Canada (NSNR), USA (TSCA) and the EU (REACH).
    • Proven experience applying read-across or analogue-based approaches in chemical hazard or risk assessment. 
    • Strong knowledge of chemical structure-activity relationships (SAR) and predictive toxicology principles.
    • Strong knowledge of chemical nomenclature systems (IUPAC, CAS) and structure-name relationships.

Salary & Benefits Information

The salary range for this position is $70,000-$76,000 per year. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate including skill set, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons. In addition to competitive compensation packages, Intertek employees are eligible for a variety of benefits including paid time off, paid holidays, medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, RRSP with company match, tuition reimbursement and more.
