Job description

Join our Next Generation Sequencing team where you'll work with cutting‑edge technology in a laboratory participating in both real‑world health outbreaks and dynamic research involving animal and zoonotic pathogens.

The primary responsibility of the position is to provide a strong service component that also includes applied research associated with diagnostic case material, emerging disease investigations, and collaborative research projects. Service will include extensive use of Next Generation Sequencing, coordination of molecular analysis and interpretation of cases submitted to KVDL, participating in field investigations along with practitioner clients and outreach personnel, contributing microbiological (primarily virology) and molecular diagnostic expertise for new agent discovery investigations and research projects, and providing expertise and leadership during emerging animal/zoonotic disease events.

Teaching responsibilities are expected to be minimal and would primarily involve interacting with veterinary students during rotations through KVDL (VDMP 902), diagnostic medicine interns, and resident trainees in the training programs and Graduate student committee activities.

Required Education & Experience
  • PhD or equivalent degree and experience in a functional diagnostic laboratory.
  • Cooperation and collaboration with investigations and research will be required. There will be frequent interactions and communications with other KVDL diagnosticians and outreach personnel, practicing veterinarians, research scientists, university extension and regulatory personnel, in select situations.
Faculty Degree Statement

The degree requirement is necessary for accreditation purposes and to ensure candidates possess the specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities that can only be attained through a formal educational program at this level.

Preferred Education & Qualifications
  • An understanding of North American animal agriculture, the desire and ability to communicate with veterinarians, producers, and allied industry personnel is preferred.
