What does an associate software engineer do?

An Associate Software Engineer is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software applications. They work closely under the supervision of more experienced engineers to write code, fix bugs, and contribute to software projects. This role typically involves learning company-specific technologies and best practices, collaborating with team members, and gradually taking on more complex tasks as skills develop.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), software development principles, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Job description

Associate Software Engineer - Search & Discovery

Department: Digital Development

Location: Boston, MA

We're looking for an Associate Software Engineer to join our Product Engineering team and help us build the features our customers love. This is an early-career role designed for someone who is eager to grow, writes clean and thoughtful code, and thrives in a collaborative environment.

You’ll work across the full stack — contributing to both frontend and backend — with close support from senior engineers and a team that invests seriously in mentorship and craft. This is a great opportunity to develop your skills while shipping real product that makes an impact.

What You’ll Do
  • Build and ship full-stack features across our product, working on both frontend interfaces and backend services and APIs
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and senior engineers to understand requirements and translate them into well‑designed, maintainable code
  • Write automated tests and participate in code reviews, giving and receiving feedback to improve quality across the team
  • Debug and resolve issues in production and development environments
  • Contribute to technical discussions and grow your understanding of system design and architectural tradeoffs
  • Proactively ask questions, seek feedback, and take ownership of your growth as an engineer
What We’re Looking for
  • 0–2 years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent experience through internships, bootcamps, or personal/open source projects
  • Basic understanding of REST APIs and how frontend and backend systems interact
  • A growth mindset — you're comfortable not knowing everything and motivated to learn quickly
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven experience working on high‑traffic, customer‑facing web applications
  • A passion for continuous learning and a "test and learn" mindset

We recognize that strong candidates may not meet every qualification listed. If you’re excited about this role and believe you can contribute, we encourage you to apply.

Salary Range: $95,000 - 105,000

The range provided is based on what we reasonably expect to pay for this job as of the time of posting. The actual salary offered will be determined based on multiple factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, job‑related knowledge, skills, geographical location, and other job‑related factors permitted by law.

Why You’ll Love Working at America’s Test Kitchen
  • Build products used by millions of passionate home cooks
  • Work on a modern, evolving tech stack with real‑world scale and complexity
  • Have meaningful influence on technical decisions without people‑management overhead
  • Collaborate with thoughtful, mission‑driven teammates across engineering, product, data, and marketing
  • Join a company that values experimentation, learning, and craftsmanship
