Job Summary: In fulfilling the Firm's mission, the TBS Senior Associate acts as the tax in charge on various business, estate, and/or individual tax returns. Depending on the size of the engagement, a TBS Senior Associate may assume "Supervisor level" responsibilities. The TBS Senior Associate supports the Firm’s goals and values through all professional communications and maintains positive working relationships.
Essential Functions:
  • Develop a relationship with engagement-related client personnel responsible for tax issues.
  • Maintain contact with client personnel throughout the year; possess a knowledge of the client and the client’s business, especially in relation to tax matters.
  • Collaborate on decisions on routine tax matters with a tax person or Tax Supervisor, Manager, Director, and/or Partner.
  • Become responsible for reviewing the income tax accrual as directed by the Tax Supervisor, Manager, Director, and/or Partner.
  • Maintain communication with Tax and Audit personnel on engagements regarding identified and ongoing tax issues.
  • Bring unusual or significant tax questions to the attention of the Manager or Director.
  • Research and propose a resolution to technical tax matters.
  • Prepare complex income tax returns, including consolidated, multi-tiered, and multi-state tax returns.
  • Wrap up tax return engagement according to engagement timetable and alert supervisor of scheduling concerns.
  • Communicate with appropriate individuals within the firm on tax matters related to clients assigned. Keeps Client Service Team informed of all important developments on engagement.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of tax accrual review and tax return preparation or review with the Audit Department.
  • Monitor engagement budget on tax matters, alert the supervisor of potential concerns and, suggest fee modification actions.
  • Demonstrate effective project management skills and inspire teamwork and responsibility by engaging team members and using current technology and tools to enhance the effectiveness of deliverables and service.
  • May participate in preparing invoices and details of fees to clients.
  • Become responsible for client adherence to compliance-related deadlines such as extensions, tax estimate requirements, and tax return filings.
  • Control all aspects of client relationships (if a manager hasn't been assigned to the engagement) related to budgets, client expectations, and billing.
Other Functions:
  • Assign work to staff based on their knowledge and capabilities.
  • Provide supervision and on-the-job training to Staff assigned to engagements.
  • Support training of team members by offering guidance, direction, and constructive criticism.
  • Assist with developing training programs and act as an instructor in professional development programs.
  • Mentor and develop the technical and professional skills of Tax Staff.
  • Supervise and review the work of TBS In-Charge Accountants, TBS Staff Accountants, Client Service Providers, and Tax Interns.
  • Develop personal priority goals and adhere to them.
  • Participate in community involvement.
  • Develop sales, writing, communication, interpersonal and other human relations skills.
  • Develop an understanding of the economics of the tax business and its relation to the Firm.
  • Support departmental goals, policies, and guidelines and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Assume responsibilities as a "champion" in specific departmental software applications or projects.
  • Participate in other administrative activities and other duties as requested by the Partners, Directors, and/or Managers.
