Job description

If you're looking for a hands-on technical role where you can work on meaningful environmental projects and still maintain a healthy work-life balance, the Ayres Midwestern Environmental team may be a great fit. We are looking for a motivated Environmental Scientist to support our growing practice within the Development Services Division.
Our team works across a broad range of environmental and redevelopment projects, and we collaborate closely with planners, landscape architects, and economic development specialists. From early-stage investigations to detailed design and construction, we help communities and private entities address environmental challenges and move projects toward successful redevelopment.
The ideal candidate is someone who wants to grow their career while working alongside experienced project managers and technical staff. You'll support site investigations, groundwater and landfill monitoring, soil and soil vapor sampling, remediation efforts, and regulatory compliance-with a strong focus on Brownfield projects in Wisconsin and beyond. Ayres' Brownfield team has helped investigate, remediate, and redevelop hundreds of sites nationwide and has earned numerous awards for this work.
Become a part of a nationally recognized USA Today Top Workplace! Our commitment to working together and improving our lives rings true, and we are proud to grow our team with driven and valued individuals. Join us today and contribute to a culture of excellence and innovation.
On any given day, you'll:
  • Build technical skills while working on challenging field and office assignments.
  • Support environmental investigation, compliance, and remediation projects.
  • Conduct fieldwork such as Phase I and II ESA tasks, site inspections, monitoring well installation oversight, and soil, groundwater, and vapor sampling.
  • Interpret environmental data and assist with technical reports, figures, and tables.
  • Travel locally and nationally for short-term field assignments.
  • Help schedule, track, and support project tasks to meet technical and financial goals.
  • Assist with Brownfield-related research and grant writing.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in geology or environmental earth science.
  • 0-5 years of relevant environmental consulting or regulatory experience (investigation, groundwater or soil sampling, or technical reporting).
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Phase I/II ESAs, hydrogeologic sampling, environmental compliance/permitting, NEPA/WEPA, or Wisconsin NR 700-series investigations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to travel in and out of state (including some overnight).
  • Strong technical writing, organization, communication, and data management skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., navigate uneven terrain, and work outdoors up to 25% of the time.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Working knowledge of Wisconsin and federal environmental regulations (NR 100-700 series, NEPA/WEPA, RCRA, CERCLA, SPCC, etc.).
  • Experience managing environmental project tasks.
  • One to three years of environmental consulting or regulatory experience.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (with current annual refresher).
  • Asbestos inspector certification.

Benefits of being part of the Ayres team:
  • Health, dental, and vision Insurance.
  • Short and long-term disability and life insurance.
  • Employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) and 401K with company match.
  • PTO, paid holidays including two floating holidays, and a flexible work schedule.
