What are Associate RF Engineers?

Associate RF Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of radio frequency (RF) systems and equipment. They typically work under the supervision of senior RF engineers to help optimize wireless communication networks, troubleshoot signal issues, and ensure regulatory compliance. Their duties may include performing site surveys, analyzing RF coverage, and supporting the deployment of wireless infrastructure. This role often requires a background in electrical engineering or a related field, and familiarity with RF testing tools and software.

What are some typical challenges an Associate RF Engineer may face when working on wireless network projects?

As an Associate RF Engineer, you may encounter challenges such as optimizing signal coverage in complex environments, mitigating interference between frequency bands, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Working closely with senior engineers and field technicians, you'll frequently analyze drive test data, adjust network parameters, and troubleshoot coverage gaps. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential, as projects often require input from design, operations, and customer support to deliver reliable and efficient wireless networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate RF Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate RF Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, RF principles, and telecommunications, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with RF simulation tools (like CST or HFSS), spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring reliable wireless system performance and successful project delivery in complex technical environments.

Job description

Antenna RF Engineer - Associates, Experienced or Senior

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) seeks an Antenna RF Engineer - Associate, Experienced or Senior level to join our team in El Segundo, California. As an Antenna RF Engineer you will design, develop, and deliver state-of-the-art communication systems for space-based applications for commercial, civil and/or national security programs. You will work with a highly motivated team that works with domestic or international customers on their latest satellite systems.

Be a part of an RF engineering team that works on the design, development, qualification, and delivery of antenna microwave hardware. In this role you will work with a large cross-functional team, including customers, suppliers, hardware and software engineers, integration and test engineers, and senior technologists to ensure that delivered products meet the mission objectives. You will perform RF analyses and simulations for antenna and passive microwave devices, work with systems engineers to verify subsystem and unit requirements, and support manufacturing integration and test to validate hardware performance. You will become the focal point for your area of responsibility!
Project assignments typically span the complete program life cycle: from system architecture, internal trades, concept studies and system definition, to satellite development, launch, and on-orbit operations and test. This is a 1st shift position.

In this position a successful Antenna RF Engineer will:

  • Research, design, develop, integrate, and review antenna and passive microwave designs, working with multiple engineering functions to meet system performance requirements.

  • Develop and validate electromagnetic requirements for various antenna/payload systems - electrical/electronic systems, communication, sensor, electronic warfare, and other electromagnetic systems and components including mechanical systems and structures.

  • Perform trade studies, modeling, simulation and other forms of analysis to predict component, interconnects, and system performance and to optimize design around established requirements.

  • Define and conduct tests to validate performance of antenna/RF designs to requirements. Use analytical tools to verify the design. Specify requirements for hardware, software, models, instruments and support equipment as required to meet test objectives.

  • Develop complex test plans to identify test approach, resources, schedules and cost estimates that meet applicable requirements, standards and regulations.

  • Manage appropriate aspects of supplier and partner performance to ensure compliance to requirements.

  • Provide support to products throughout their lifecycle by developing root-cause analysis of anomalies and other engineering support as requested.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

This position requires a U.S. Security Clearance, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. Ability to Obtain U.S. Top Secret/SCI - Final Post-Start

BasicQualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, or related STEM field.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Master's degree preferred.

  • Level 3: Typically, 5 years or more of work related experience

  • Level 4: Typically, 9 years or more of work related experience

  • Experience in the design or development of payload and/or phased array antennas

  • Hands-on hardware (lab environment) experience, with preference to Antenna hardware design and test experience and knowledge of test equipment (VNA/PNA/Spectrum Analyzer/Oscilloscope/etc)

  • Experience in phased array antenna production and verification

  • Experience in antenna analysis tool development and/or machine learning tool development

  • Knowledge of good manufacturing practices, DFMAT, and design and process FMEAs.

  • Experience working with suppliers on custom part procurement

  • Knowledge of hardware manufacturing techniques including but not limited to additive manufacturing, wire and sinker EDM, electroplating and electroforming.
