What is an associate RF engineer?

Associate RF Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of radio frequency (RF) systems and equipment. They typically work under the supervision of senior RF engineers to help optimize wireless communication networks, troubleshoot signal issues, and ensure regulatory compliance. Their duties may include performing site surveys, analyzing RF coverage, and supporting the deployment of wireless infrastructure. This role often requires a background in electrical engineering or a related field, and familiarity with RF testing tools and software.

What are some typical challenges an associate RF engineer may face when working on wireless network projects?

As an Associate RF Engineer, you may encounter challenges such as optimizing signal coverage in complex environments, mitigating interference between frequency bands, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Working closely with senior engineers and field technicians, you'll frequently analyze drive test data, adjust network parameters, and troubleshoot coverage gaps. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential, as projects often require input from design, operations, and customer support to deliver reliable and efficient wireless networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate RF engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate RF Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, RF principles, and telecommunications, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with RF simulation tools (like CST or HFSS), spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring reliable wireless system performance and successful project delivery in complex technical environments.

What is the difference between Associate Rf Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectAssociate Rf EngineerRF Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; some certificationsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; often more experience
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, team-based projects, testing, and troubleshootingMore independent, involved in design, optimization, and deployment
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in RF testing, data collection, and basic troubleshootingDesigning RF systems, performance analysis, and advanced troubleshooting

The main difference between an Associate Rf Engineer and an RF Engineer lies in experience and responsibility level. Associate Rf Engineers typically handle entry-level tasks such as testing and data collection, while RF Engineers are more involved in system design and optimization. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but RF Engineers usually have more industry experience and take on more complex projects.

Job description

Description:

At Mann Wireless, your role supports our essential work of making cell phones and emergency responder radios work in buildings. Our team consists of Engineers and skilled RF technicians. At Mann Wireless, every day offers variety and new challenges. There is always something new to learn! Mann Wireless is a small, family-owned business and has been in operation for over 20 years. Our office environment is casual with a team of exceptionally friendly people.

This is an entry-level engineering position that bridges field operations and engineering design. The Engineering Technologist supports Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and public-safety in-building wireless projects from quoting through design, testing, and closeout. This role is ideal for someone who wants to build a long-term career in RF/telecommunications engineering and is willing to learn the business from the ground up — including spending time in the field early on to understand how our systems are actually built before moving into a primarily design-focused role.

Responsibilities:

• Develop project quotes, estimates, and proposals for DAS/public safety wireless projects, working closely with the sales and project management teams.

• Manage and support internal IT-related tasks and systems relevant to the role, acting as a key point of contact for IT needs within the engineering group and office.

• Create and maintain designs using the iBwave design platform, including construction drawings, equipment layouts, and design submittals for review by a senior engineering technologist or engineer.

• Perform on-site RF surveys (pre- and post-installation) to collect signal data and site conditions used to inform system design.

• Perform system testing, commissioning, and signal verification primarily using PCTEL test equipment (spectrum analyzers, signal survey tools, etc.), along with other RF test tools as needed.

• Prepare bills of materials (BOM) and supporting design documentation.

• Perform basic link budget calculations and coverage/data analysis.

• Assist with light construction and field installation tasks — particularly during the initial training period — to build a working understanding of how DAS/BDA systems, cabling, and site infrastructure are installed and integrated.

• Travel to job sites as needed to support the field team, verify installations against engineering designs, and troubleshoot design-related field issues.

• Communicate and coordinate with the field team to provide updated designs, drawings, and technical guidance as site conditions or project scope evolve.

• Document field changes, as-built conditions, and site audit findings, incorporating field data back into design packages.

• Ensure designs and installations comply with applicable codes, standards, and client/engineering specifications.

• Support project documentation, including design submittals and closeout packages.

• Participate in team meetings and project reviews; communicate project status, risks, and technical requirements to internal stakeholders.

• Other duties as assigned, with increasing responsibility for design, testing, and field coordination as skills develop.

Requirements:

Requirements:

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Telecommunications, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience/military background will be considered instead of a degree.

• 0–2 years of experience in RF/telecom, IT, or a related technical field; internship or hands-on project experience is a plus.

• IT experience or aptitude is desired, as this position will manage IT-related tasks in addition to engineering duties.

• Basic understanding of RF theory, wireless communications, and DAS/in-building wireless concepts (or demonstrated ability to learn quickly).

• Familiarity or willingness to learn the iBwave design platform.

• Familiarity or willingness to learn RF test equipment, preferably PCTEL survey/test tools, spectrum analyzers, or similar.

• Comfortable with light construction/field work, including assisting technicians with installation tasks during onboarding and periodically thereafter.

• Strong computer skills, including MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); CAD, Visio, or Bluebeam experience a plus.

• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and a willingness to learn.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly communicate technical information to both field and office teams.

• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, construction documents, and specifications (or aptitude to learn).

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with engineering and field teams.

• Possesses a dependable mode of transportation with a valid Driver's License and a clear, safe driving record.

• Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in physically active field environments as needed.

• Must be able to travel to job sites, including occasional overnight travel, as required.
