What does an associate quantitative analyst do?

An Associate Quantitative Analyst is responsible for applying mathematical, statistical, and analytical methods to financial and risk management problems. Their tasks often include building financial models, analyzing large datasets, and supporting senior analysts or portfolio managers with data-driven insights. They typically use programming languages like Python, R, or MATLAB to develop algorithms and test investment strategies. Associate Quantitative Analysts play a crucial role in helping organizations make data-informed decisions in areas such as trading, asset management, and risk assessment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate quantitative analyst?

To thrive as an Associate Quantitative Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, advanced proficiency in mathematics and statistics, and typically a degree in a quantitative field such as mathematics, statistics, finance, or engineering. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, experience with statistical modeling tools, and knowledge of data analysis platforms are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and collaborate with team members. These skills are crucial for developing accurate models, providing actionable insights, and supporting data-driven decision-making in complex financial environments.

What are some common challenges an associate quantitative analyst faces when transitioning from academia to industry?

One common challenge for Associate Quantitative Analysts moving from academia to industry is adapting to the fast-paced, results-driven environment where deadlines and business impacts are prioritized over theoretical exploration. Unlike academic research, industry projects often require quick, practical solutions and effective communication with non-technical stakeholders. Additionally, analysts may need to balance multiple projects simultaneously and collaborate closely with teams such as risk management, IT, and trading desks. Developing strong project management and communication skills can help ease this transition.

Job description

Senior Business Analyst, Product Strategy

At Capital One, we are relentless innovators with a proven track record of transforming customers' experiences and the financial services industry. We're delivering best-in-class innovation so that our more than 100 million customers can manage their finances with ease.

We consider ourselves the bank a technology company would build - empowered to use artificial intelligence (from machine learning to generative AI) to transform everyday banking into real-time, intelligent products that help customers improve their financial well-being. We're all-in on the cloud and are a leader in the adoption of open source. We build our own products and release them with a speed and agility that allows us to get new customer experiences to market quickly. We're going boldly where no bank has gone before. And, as a founder-led company, we are centered in our mission to help customers succeed.

The Role | General Responsibilities:

We're seeking a Senior Associate, Product Strategy, to support strategic priorities for the Consumer and Developer Experience (CDX) leadership team. CDX is an exciting space with diverse product responsibilities. The organization's remit spans customer digital engagement, including the Capital One app; Capital One's marketing platform, analytics, and personalization engine; the product suite used to manage all Capital One suppliers and vendors; products associated with the company's risk management responsibilities; and more.

The Senior Associate will join a horizontal product and strategy team that supports priorities across CDX. The product and strategy team serves as an internal engine for both vision and strategic alignment, occupying a unique space at the intersection of strategic advisory and product creation. We operate with the rigor of top-tier consulting to solve the organization's hardest strategic questions, drive the annual planning process, and align our long-term priorities. At the same time, we are builders: we act as an innovation lab, developing prototypes and partnering closely with product and engineering teams to translate conceptual visions into tangible, scaled digital experiences. We are looking for someone who thrives in this duality - someone who is equally energized by big-picture questions about where the world is going, thorny problems that require a strategic mindset and close partnership with product and tech teams, and hands-on building.

Specifically, the Senior Associate will

  • Partner with CDX leaders to answer thorny strategic questions, using a consulting-style model

  • Lead workstreams on priority strategic initiatives for CDX, such as AI transformation

  • Support the organization's intelligence unit, providing analytics, landscape assessments, thematic deep dives, and more to help the organization see around corners and anticipate headwinds and tailwinds

  • Set the vision for long-term product innovation, including partnering with engineering to deliver product prototypes

  • Obsess about internal and external customer satisfaction by establishing trusted, close touch relationships with key stakeholders throughout the company

  • Contribute to CDX organization's strategic capabilities (e.g., by developing trainings)

  • Role model AI adoption by inventing and spreading solutions that improve work efficiency, quality, and fun

The Person:

  • Exceptional strategy and strategic problem-solving skills, with a record of answering hard questions in ambiguous areas

  • Very strong analytical skills, including quantitative analysis

  • A strong customer or product orientation - thinks in terms of customers' needs

  • An innovation mindset, characterized by a future orientation, the ability to set a vision, and a willingness to push boundaries

  • Strong relationship-building skills that result in trusted partnerships across organizations

  • Ability to establish credibility and build relations with colleagues from different disciplines (e.g., data scientists, P&L owners, designers, engineers)

  • Intellectual curiosity: an interest in understanding and experimenting with new leading edge technologies, organizational models, and ways of thinking

  • Demonstrated ability to employ judgment and experience to make rapid and complex decision

  • Highly effective communication skills (both written and verbal)

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of professional experience performing analysis

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining one of the following with an expectation that the required degree will be obtained on or before the scheduled start date:

    • A Bachelor's Degree in a quantitative field (Business, Finance, Accounting, Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer engineering, Software engineering, Mechanical engineering, Information Systems or a related quantitative field)

    • A Master's Degree in a quantitative field (Business, Finance, Accounting, Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical engineering, Information Systems or a related quantitative field) or an MBA with a quantitative concentration

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Business or quantitative field such as Finance, Economics, Physical Sciences, Math, Statistics, Engineering

  • 1+ years of experience in Statistical model building

  • 1+ years of experience in market research

  • 1+ years of experience in SQL querying

  • 2+ years of experience in business analysis

  • 1+ years of experience in consulting
