What is an associate QA engineer?

Associate QA Engineers are entry-level professionals responsible for testing software to ensure it meets quality standards before release. They create and execute test cases, report bugs, and work closely with developers to resolve issues. Their role is crucial in identifying problems early in the development process to improve product reliability and user satisfaction. Associate QA Engineers typically use various testing tools and may be involved in both manual and automated testing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate QA engineer?

To thrive as an Associate QA Engineer, you need a strong understanding of software testing principles, attention to detail, and a foundational knowledge of programming or scripting languages, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with testing tools such as Selenium, Jira, or TestRail, and knowledge of automated testing frameworks or ISTQB certification are typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset help you excel in cross-functional teams and adapt to changing project needs. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality software products by identifying and resolving issues efficiently throughout the development lifecycle.

What are some common challenges faced by associate QA engineers when working with cross-functional teams?

Associate QA Engineers often collaborate with developers, product managers, and designers to ensure software quality. A common challenge is clearly communicating defects or requirements, especially when different teams use technical jargon or have different priorities. Balancing tight project deadlines with thorough testing can also be demanding. Being proactive in asking questions and fostering open communication helps Associate QA Engineers navigate these challenges and contribute effectively to the team's success.

What is the difference between Associate Qa Engineer vs QA Tester?

In contrast, a QA Tester mainly focuses on executing tests and reporting issues. Both roles are essential in software quality assurance but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Is associate QA engineer still in demand?

Associate QA engineers are still in demand as companies continue to prioritize software quality assurance, especially with the growth of agile development and automation tools like Selenium and JIRA. Entry-level QA roles often require knowledge of testing methodologies, scripting, and familiarity with testing frameworks, making them valuable for organizations seeking to improve product reliability.

Job description

Role: Associate QA Engineer
Location: New York, NY (Hybrid)
Type: Full Time - Contract

About the Role
We are seeking a motivated Associate QA Engineer with experience in software testing, automation, and API validation to help ensure the quality and reliability of our digital products. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with modern testing frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, Robot Framework, or similar tools, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with product managers, developers, and cross-functional teams to validate new features, design effective test strategies, and support the release process. You will be responsible for creating test plans, building regression test suites, and contributing to automated testing frameworks to improve product quality and release confidence.

The position requires experience with API testing, Python-based automation, and working with SQL/NoSQL databases, along with familiarity with cloud environments (preferably Google Cloud Platform), Agile development practices, and tools such as Azure DevOps or Jira. You will play a key role in strengthening the testing process, identifying potential issues early, and helping deliver high-quality software solutions to our customers.

Responsibilities:
  • Participate in and improve the whole lifecycle of services—from inception and design, through deployment, operation, and refinement.
  • Participate in the release planning process to review functional specifications and create release plans.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to design verification test plans.
  • Design regression test suites and review with engineering, applications, and the field organization.
  • Produce regular reports on the status and quality of software releases and be prepared to speak to findings in an informative way to all levels of the audience.
  • Design and implement a test automation strategy for multiple product development teams at the onset of the project.
  • Develop and contribute to a culture of high performance, transparency, and continuous improvement as it relates to the infrastructure services and streamlining of the development pipeline.
  • Participate in a diverse team of talented engineers globally, providing guidance, support, and clear priorities.

What We are Looking For:
  • Minimum of 6 years of Quality Engineering experience (required)
  • Hands-on experience with at least 2 of the leading testing tools/frameworks like Playwright or Cypress, Robot Framework, JMeter, Rest Assured.
  • Hands-on experience working on Python.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to solve complex technical problems (required)
  • API testing - understanding of RESTful design and best practices.
  • Hands-on experience testing APIs - both with and without automation tools.
  • Experience working on SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience working on Cloud Technologies, preferably Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform).
  • Experience with Agile Software Development methodologies and practices
  • Experience with performance testing and tools like JMeter, Locust.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps or Jira, or another similar issue/bug tracking system
  • Experience working in an Agile software development organization
  • Ability to think abstract – to ensure the ability to not conform to the norm. Norms do not find bugs quickly, Ability to work in an advisory capacity to identify key technical and business problems, develop and evaluate
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
