The Positionย 

The Associate Deanย for Researchย and Industry Engagement (AD/RIE)ย worksย closely with the Dean to provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction to advance the College's research agenda and cultivate productive partnerships with industry, government, and academic collaborators. The Associate Dean supports faculty recruitment, development, and research advancement; oversees research-related facilities and technical staff; andย representsย the College in internal and external forums.ย 

The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering and collaborates withย Collegeย leadership,ย department chairs, faculty, staff,ย Academic Affairs,ย Office of Research and Sponsored Programs,ย andย other internal andย external stakeholders to achieve the College's strategic goals.ย 

Key Responsibilitiesย 

Research Leadershipย 

  • Partner with faculty to shape, strengthen, andย submitย competitive research proposals that advance scholarly impact and external funding success.ย 

  • Serve as a strategic liaison between the College and key research partners, including the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, and the Office of Undergraduate Research.ย 

  • Cultivate collaborative, interdisciplinary grant activity within the College and across campus to expand undergraduate and graduate research opportunities.ย 

  • Proactivelyย identifyย and promote internal and external funding opportunities aligned with facultyย expertise, emerging research areas, and College priorities.ย 

  • Design and launch a Dean's Research Seminar Series thatย showcasesย faculty scholarship, fosters connection, and elevates the College's research profile.ย 

  • Collaborate closely with the College senior budget analyst to support responsible stewardship of grant funds and sustainable research growth.ย 

Industry and Government Engagementย 

  • Build strong, forwardlooking partnerships with governmentย organizations, industryย partners,ย andย alumni, to deepen engagement.ย 

  • Collaborate closely with the Dean, department chairs, college development officers, and career services to cultivate strategic partnerships that advance research, workforce development, and student successย 

  • Expand sponsored research, crosssector collaboration, and experiential learning opportunities in partnership with industry and government stakeholders.ย 

Technical Staff Supervisionย 

  • Serveย asย  managerย for approximately nineย equipmentย technicians who support teaching and research laboratories.ย 

  • Maintain position descriptions; hire and evaluateย technicalย staff; manage professional development; oversee absence management; and liaise with Human Resources on personnel matters.ย 

  • Ensure the safe operation, maintenance, and modernization of laboratory equipment and research infrastructure.ย 

Technology,ย Facilities and Space Planningย 

  • Collaborate withย Facilities,ย Informationย Technology, and campus partners to oversee the renovation, repurposing, and modernization of instructional and research spaces,ย including technologyenabled environmentsย and high-performance computing infrastructure.ย 

  • Provide strategic direction on the allocation of physical and technologysupported space resources to departments, faculty researchers, and student groups.ย 

  • Work with department chairs and stakeholders to assess needs and recommend adjustments to ensure effective andย equitableย spaceย utilization.ย 

Internal and External Relationsย ย 

  • Participate in the Dean's Leadership Team,ย Dean's Council, and other campus and college committees.ย 

  • Represent the College in systemwide and external engineering research leadership groups.ย 

  • Engage regularly with Academic Affairs and Faculty Affairs leadershipย regardingย research and faculty advancement initiatives.ย 

The incumbent may drive on university businessย approximately onceย per month to attend conferences and off-campus events.ย 

Required Qualificationsย 

  • Earned Ph.D. in Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution.ย 

  • Must have achieved tenure or have a record to support tenure based on effective teaching, scholarship, and service that merits appointment at the full professor level in the College of Engineering.ย 

  • Minimum ofย twoย years of leadership experience (e.g., department chair, associate chair, center director,ย interim leadership positions,ย or major committee chair).ย 

  • Knowledgeย of government and industrial funding sourcesย and a successful record of research funding.ย 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives, build collaborative teams, and respond effectively to deadlines.ย 

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.ย 

Preferred Qualificationsย 

  • Knowledgeย ofย and experience in fiscal management and compliance with federal regulations and oversight of grants and contracts.ย 

  • Knowledge and experience in managing intellectual property rights and entrepreneurial opportunities,ย including a record of entrepreneurial attainment.ย ย 

  • Experience in planning, implementing, and sustaining comprehensive research centers or programs.ย 

  • Research funding from major federal agencies such as NSF, DOE,ย and DOD.ย 

  • Experience in partnering with industry and business.ย 

  • Experience withย facultyย professional development and mentoring.ย 

  • A demonstrated commitment to the recruitment and retention of a culturally diverse and talented faculty and student body.ย 

  • Experience working withย students from varied educational backgrounds, including firstgeneration college students.ย
