Associate Packaging Designer information

What does an associate packaging designer do?

An Associate Packaging Designer assists in the creation and development of packaging for products, working under the guidance of senior designers or art directors. Their responsibilities typically include generating design concepts, preparing mockups, selecting materials, and collaborating with cross-functional teams such as marketing and production. They also help ensure that packaging designs are visually appealing, functional, cost-effective, and aligned with brand guidelines. The role often involves using design software and keeping up with industry trends and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate packaging designer?

To thrive as an Associate Packaging Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator and Photoshop), and a degree in graphic design or a related field. Familiarity with packaging dielines, print production processes, and 3D modeling software like Esko or Cinema 4D is often required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and meet client needs. These abilities are crucial for creating innovative, functional, and visually appealing packaging that aligns with brand guidelines and manufacturing constraints.

What are some common challenges faced by associate packaging designers in balancing creativity with practical constraints?

As an Associate Packaging Designer, one of the main challenges is creating visually appealing designs that also meet practical requirements such as manufacturability, cost, sustainability, and compliance with regulations. Designers often need to collaborate closely with engineers, marketing teams, and suppliers to ensure their concepts can be produced efficiently and within budget. Balancing the desire for innovation with the need to adhere to brand guidelines, material limitations, and shipping considerations is a frequent part of the role. Developing strong communication and problem-solving skills can help overcome these challenges and lead to successful packaging solutions.

Job description

As Assistant Packaging Designer, you'll help bring packaging and display concepts to life — from first sketch to final, press-ready files — for some of the biggest names in retail. Working within licensed brand guidelines, you'll apply creativity and resourcefulness to design solutions that showcase product features clearly and effectively, all while balancing brand standards and cost targets. You'll gain hands-on experience with iconic national brands like Champion, Reebok, And1, and more.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Packaging Designer and Packaging & Corporate Creative Services team to conceptualize, develop, and execute design strategies across print and digital platforms.
  • Support the Marketing department as a creative resource, contributing insights and recommendations across a variety of projects.
  • Manage time effectively to consistently deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Produce and finalize packaging and display mechanicals to "ready for press" (RFP) standards.
  • Build mock-up packaging to test and validate dimensions, and to prepare physical samples for internal and stakeholder meetings.
  • Support photo shoots as needed, ensuring output aligns with design objectives.
  • Partner with Packaging Developers and Packaging Production Artists to maintain design integrity throughout the development process.
  • Retouch images for packaging and display materials as required.
  • Use Airtable to track assigned projects through the go-to-market packaging process.
  • Collaborate across cross-functional teams to advance shared goals and business objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in packaging design and POS displays
  • Strong design creative, conceptual, and organizational skills, with the ability to execute design work from concept to completion
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office required
  • Experience creating "RFP" (ready for press) mechanicals, knowledge of photography and photo retouching
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to solve problems
  • Experience with Airtable or other project tracking systems & product management software like PLM a plus
  • Experience with licensed branding and interpreting brand style guides for product extensions a plus

Annual salary range starting at $60,000+

The disclosed salary range is commensurate with experience and does not reflect the total compensation package. Our associates have access to other valuable benefits that our Human Resources team is happy to share with candidates during the interview process.
