Job description

The Custodial Operations Manager is responsible for leading, managing, and optimizing custodial services across a major medical university campus during the evening shift. This role oversees cleaning operations within academic buildings, research laboratories, clinical spaces, administrative offices, and common areas to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership

  • Direct and oversee evening custodial operations across multiple campus facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, offices, clinical environments, and public spaces.
  • Develop and implement staffing plans, cleaning schedules, and service standards to ensure consistent and efficient service delivery.
  • Monitor operational performance through inspections, audits, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Ensure proper staffing coverage during evening operations, including emergency response situations and special events as needed.
  • Enforce all safety policies and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain compliance with client expectations, contractual requirements, and regulatory standards.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise custodial personnel, including supervisors, leads, and frontline team members.
  • Establish performance expectations and conduct regular performance evaluations.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, safety, and customer service.
  • Manage employee scheduling, labor allocation, attendance, overtime, and workforce productivity.
  • Support employee development through ongoing coaching and training initiatives.
Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement
  • Conduct routine facility inspections and quality audits to ensure adherence to established cleanliness standards.
  • Address service deficiencies promptly and implement corrective action plans as necessary.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, service quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to ensure custodial services align with organizational needs and expectations.
  • Maintain accurate records related to inspections, staffing, training, safety compliance, and operational performance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of custodial, facilities, environmental services, or operations management experience.
  • Prior experience supervising large teams in healthcare, higher education, research, or institutional environments preferred.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of custodial best practices, cleaning methods, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Experience with labor management, scheduling, performance management, and employee development.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and facility management or work order systems.
  • Ability to work evenings and respond to operational needs outside of regular business hours when necessary.
