The Opportunity

The Communications Operations Supervisor provides functional and operational supervision for the Campus Safety & Security Communications Center and Information Desk. This position is responsible for ensuring reliable communications operations, consistent service delivery, and adherence to established departmental standards, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

The position exercises supervisory authority over communications operations through the establishment and enforcement of operational standards, development and maintenance of procedures and documentation, coordination of training and onboarding, administration of communications systems, and provision of operational direction and performance guidance to staff.

While the position does not routinely serve as a full-time shift supervisor, it provides shift coverage when operational needs require and maintains functional supervisory responsibility for communications operations through training oversight, procedural enforcement, systems administration, and performance guidance. The position works collaboratively with peer supervisors to promote seamless and consistent service delivery across functional areas.

The Communications Operations Supervisor operates with a high degree of independence within the assigned functional scope and reports directly to the Associate Director of Campus Safety & Security.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Communications Operations & Systems Oversight

  • Maintain operational readiness of the Communications Center, including CAD, radio, telephone, and related communications systems.

  • Coordinate communications system administration, vendor interactions, issue tracking, and related documentation.

  • Monitor and support operational continuity during system outages, incidents, and critical events.

  • Maintain required operational logs, records, and compliance documentation.

  • Identify operational issues and recommend improvements to communications systems, processes, and service delivery.

Training, Procedures & Standards

  • Develop, maintain, implement, and enforce communications procedures, workflows, protocols, and reference materials.

  • Coordinate onboarding, training, and continuing education for Communications Center staff.

  • Provide operational guidance and performance input related to communications standards and expectations.

  • Monitor staff adherence to departmental policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Identify training needs and coordinate appropriate development opportunities for communications personnel.

Front Desk & Shared Service Operations

  • Work regularly at the Information Desk alongside service operations staff.

  • Provide professional, customer-focused support to students, faculty, staff, visitors, and other members of the campus community.

  • Serve as an operational point of contact during assigned coverage.

  • Provide Communications Center shift coverage when operational needs require.

  • Assist with resolving operational issues and ensuring continuity of front desk and communications services.

Operational Coordination & Campus Engagement

  • Coordinate communications activities with peer supervisors to support consistent and unified departmental operations.

  • Support campus events, emergency operations, and other departmental service initiatives.

  • Participate in meetings, committees, training activities, and cross-functional coordination efforts.

  • Collaborate with Campus Safety & Security leadership and campus partners to identify operational needs and implement effective solutions.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance communications operations, customer service, and campus safety.

Compensation


The hourly rate for this role isup to $28.00. The final offer will be based on the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience, as well as applicable state regulations, internal equity, and business needs, and may fall outside of the stated range.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.

  • Working knowledge of basic grammar and composition.

Required Experience

  • Three to five years of related work experience, preferably in an administrative, communications, public safety, or operational environment.

  • Prior administrative or supervisory experience, including scheduling responsibilities, preferred.

Required Licenses, Certifications, and/or Security Clearances

  • Valid Arizona Driver's License required.

  • Must meet the University's standards for approved drivers.

  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screening.

  • No felony convictions.

Driving Record Requirements

Unacceptable driving records, as defined by the University's Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17, include the following within three years from the date of each occurrence:

  • More than three moving violations and/or accidents within a three-year period.

  • More than two moving violations and/or accidents within any one-year period.

  • A major conviction within the previous three years, including, but not limited to, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and/or homicide or assault by motor vehicle.

Required Within One Year of Becoming a Supervisor

Must obtain the following certifications within one year of assuming supervisory responsibilities:

  • Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Communications Center Manager certification.

  • APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator Instructor certification.

  • IS-300: Intermediate Incident Command System (ICS) for Expanding Incidents.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Administrative and supervisory experience, including staff scheduling and coordination.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other standard office technologies, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.

  • Ability to adapt to changing operational needs and priorities.

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, leadership, campus partners, and members of the campus community.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive operational information.
