Job description

Description
Milton Hershey School (MHS) is one of the world's best pre-K through 12th grade private schools, where approximately 2,200 students from disadvantaged backgrounds are provided with a cost-free home and a top-notch education. Thanks to the generosity of Milton and Catherine Hershey in 1909, the school is fully endowed today, with the resources to ensure students can thrive. The school has prepared over 12,000 graduates to lead fulfilling and productive lives and is expanding to serve more students for future generations.
MHS is seeking an experienced Supervisor, Commercial Operations to provide dedicated, high-quality, reliable, safe, and efficient operation of our scholastic and administrative buildings on campus in an uninterrupted 24/7/365 basis model. Reporting to the Associate Director of Facilities, the Supervisor, Commercial Operations leads critical building-system operations, preventive and corrective maintenance, employee and contractor activities, and energy-focused initiatives that support uninterrupted service across campus. This role requires weekly on-call rotation (24 hours a day, 7 days per week) for maintenance and emergency situations. Standard hours of second shift operation: Monday - Friday 1:00 pm - 9:30 pm and may change due to seasonal and/or programmatic changes.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support the planning, coordination, and supervision of operations for commercial buildings, the Central Plant, and campus mini plants.
  • Oversee critical equipment serving scholastic and administrative facilities, including large-scale chilled-water, boiler, and electrical-distribution systems.
  • Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance performed by internal employees and outside contractors; inspect completed work for safety, quality, and accuracy.
  • Manage work requests, preventive maintenance schedules, and backlog activity through the school's computerized maintenance management system.
  • Plan shutdowns and major repairs, complete or verify daily inspections, monitor critical alarms, and escalate significant operational issues.
  • Lead daily work assignments, employee training, performance evaluations, conflict resolution, and compliance with school policies and procedures.
  • Support construction and renovation planning; assist with bids, vendor quotes, purchasing, work-order cost allocation, and inventory management.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, life-safety, and plant-safety requirements.
  • Partner with building automation, residential operations, mechanical trades, and energy-management teams to improve system performance and control utility costs.
  • Coordinate campus utility locates, mechanical support for campus events, and after-hours operational response as needed.

Skills for Success
  • Strong knowledge of physical plant operations, maintenance practices, and preventive maintenance program development.
  • Proficiency with building automation systems and computerized maintenance management software.
  • Effective leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize competing operational needs, make sound decisions, and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Working knowledge of commonly used business and facilities software.

Competitive salary based on experience plus an excellent benefits package (includes paid time off, medical, dental, vision insurance, and financial benefits).
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of direct experience managing central power plant or complex facilities operations within a large institutional or educational campus.
  • Experience supervising employees, contractors, maintenance activities, and critical building systems.
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction and General Industry certificate.
  • Arc-flash safety training and current CPR certification.
  • Ability to respond to operational emergencies and share responsibility for after-hours maintenance and operations calls to support critical building systems to operate on an interrupted 24/7 basis.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a high degree of integrity as all MHS staff are role models for MHS students.
  • Candidates should be willing to actively engage with students.

Preferred
  • EPA Universal Refrigeration Certification.
  • Niagara technical certification.
  • APPA supervisory training.
  • Experience with building automation systems, utilities, energy conservation, and large-scale HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire-alarm, and mechanical systems.
