Position Summary
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University at Buffalo seeks a full-time Postdoctoral Associate to support an interdisciplinary research program focused on image-guided navigation for neurovascular interventions.
The successful candidate will develop and evaluate medical robotic systems with artificial intelligence capabilities for vascular navigation using catheter and guidewire technologies guided by X-ray fluoroscopy and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The candidate will work closely with clinicians, engineers, and research collaborators to advance project objectives, validate methodologies, achieve project milestones, and disseminate findings through publications and presentations.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
• Develop robotic components and systems for catheter and guidewire shaping and manipulation.
• Design, prototype, and evaluate electromechanical systems for endovascular navigation applications.
• Develop and evaluate artificial intelligence and reinforcement learning approaches for autonomous guidewire shaping and control.
• Design experiments, validation strategies, and quantitative performance metrics for robotic navigation and wire-shaping systems.
• Develop embedded control systems and software for robotic devices and supporting hardware.
• Coordinate research objectives and technical requirements with clinicians, engineers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
• Integrate information from medical imaging, vascular anatomy, device behavior, and robotic control systems to support system-level navigation development.
• Track progress toward defined project milestones and contribute to technical reports and project updates.
• Prepare manuscripts, presentations, and other scientific materials describing research methods and findings.
• Prepare materials for grant proposal submissions.
The department of neurosurgery in the Jacobs School is actively recruiting for a laboratory technician. This individual will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) as the laboratory technician in the cerebrovascular lab. Job duties include: conducting experiments under supervision of professor (animal care and surgeries), writing and revising IACUC and IRB protocols, ordering lab supplies and maintaining the daily functions of the lab), assist undergraduate, graduate and medical students in their research (qPCR, RNA-sequencing, cell culture), The University at Buffalo (UB) #ubuffalo is one of America's leading public research universities and a flagship of the State University of New York system, recognized for our excellence and our impact. Minimum Qualifications
• PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related engineering field.
• Experience in robotics design, mechatronics, electromechanical systems, or robotic device development.
• Experience in electronic circuit and printed circuit board (PCB) design.
• Experience in embedded systems development and microcontroller programming (e.g., Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi, or similar platforms).
• Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software and rapid prototyping techniques, including 3D printing.
• Experience developing artificial intelligence and machine learning methods for research applications.
• Proficiency in programming languages commonly used for robotics and AI development (e.g., Python, C/C++, MATLAB).
• Strong command of statistical methods and their application to biomedical and engineering research.
• Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific findings clearly and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary research teams.
Preferred Qualifications
• Three or more years of experience working in a clinical, translational, or medical device research environment.
• Experience collaborating with clinicians and coordinating research objectives across multidisciplinary teams.
• Knowledge of neurovascular anatomy, cerebrovascular disease, and neurovascular interventions, with an emphasis on mechanical thrombectomy.
• Experience developing robotic medical devices or image-guided surgical/interventional systems.
• Experience with X-ray fluoroscopy and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) imaging.
• Familiarity with reinforcement learning and autonomous robotic control.
• Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) or similar robotics software frameworks.
• Experience providing guidance or mentorship to graduate students.
