What is the difference between Associate Machine Learning Chemistry vs Associate Data Scientist?

AspectAssociate Machine Learning ChemistryAssociate Data Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemistry, Data Science, or related fields; familiarity with ML frameworksBachelor's or Master's in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science; programming skills in Python/R
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, pharmaceutical or chemical companies, biotech firmsTech companies, finance, healthcare, consulting firms
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in industries applying ML to chemical data, drug discovery, materials scienceApplied across industries analyzing large datasets, predictive modeling

Associate Machine Learning Chemistry focuses on applying machine learning techniques specifically to chemical and scientific data, often within research or pharmaceutical settings. In contrast, Associate Data Scientist has a broader scope, working with various data types across multiple industries. Both roles require strong analytical skills and familiarity with ML tools, but their industry focus and data types differ.

What are Associate Machine Learning Chemists?

Associate Machine Learning Chemists are professionals who combine expertise in chemistry with skills in machine learning to analyze chemical data, develop predictive models, and accelerate scientific discovery. They often work on tasks like predicting molecular properties, optimizing chemical reactions, and supporting drug discovery efforts using computational tools. Typically, these roles require a strong foundation in chemistry, programming experience (often in Python), and familiarity with machine learning libraries. Associate positions are generally entry-level or early-career roles, providing support to senior scientists and data scientists in research and development teams.

How does an Associate Machine Learning Chemistry professional typically collaborate with research scientists and engineers?

As an Associate Machine Learning Chemistry professional, you will frequently work alongside research scientists and chemical engineers to develop predictive models and analyze experimental data. Collaboration involves translating chemical problems into machine learning tasks, sharing insights from model results, and participating in interdisciplinary meetings to refine research objectives. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you may be required to explain machine learning concepts to non-technical colleagues and integrate their domain expertise into your models. This collaborative environment fosters both scientific discovery and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Machine Learning Chemistry, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Machine Learning Chemistry professional, you need a solid background in chemistry, data analysis, and machine learning, typically supported by a relevant degree such as chemistry, computer science, or a related field. Experience with programming languages like Python, machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, scikit-learn), and cheminformatics software is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable effective collaboration on interdisciplinary teams and the development of innovative solutions in computational chemistry research.

Job description

Associate ML Engineer/ Agentic AI

Are you interested in harnessing technology and AI to transform healthcare?

At XiFin, we believe a healthier, more efficient healthcare system starts with strong financial and operational foundations. Our innovative technologies help diagnostic providers, laboratories, and healthcare systems manage complexity, drive better outcomes, and stay focused on what matters most: patient care.

We're on a mission to simplify the business side of healthcare and we know that mission takes people from all backgrounds and experiences. Whether you're early in your career or bringing years of expertise, we welcome your perspective, your curiosity, and your passion. We value individuals who ask questions, challenge the status quo, and want to grow while making a real difference.

About the Role

As an Associate ML Engineer/ Agentic AI, you will be part of a high-performing team of AI and engineering professionals reporting directly to the Director of AI Engineering (or equivalent leader). In this role, you will help build the next generation of Agentic AI, AI systems that can plan, act, and deliver outcomes, not just respond to prompts.

You will contribute to AI agents deployed in real production environments, gaining hands-on experience with generative AI, automation, and decision-driven systems. This role offers strong mentorship, meaningful project ownership, and clear growth opportunities within a fast-evolving AI practice.

This position will be located at one of our offices in San Diego, CA.

This position is not eligible for employment sponsorship now or in the future. Applicants must have current and ongoing authorization to work in the United States.

How You Will Make an Impact

In this role, you'll:

  • Contribute to the development and improvement of AI agents that execute multi-step workflows and business processes
  • Work with large language models (LLMs), APIs, and internal platforms to automate real-world healthcare and revenue cycle operations
  • Support agent behavior design, including planning logic, decision-making frameworks, validation layers, and guardrails
  • Test, monitor, and improve agent outputs, performance metrics, and system reliability in production environments
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, product, data, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into intelligent automation solutions
  • Assist in experimentation, prompt engineering, model evaluation, and iterative performance tuning
What You Will Bring to the Team

We're looking for someone with a growth mindset and a passion for learning. You might be a great fit if you:

  • Demonstrate a strong growth mindset and eagerness to learn emerging AI technologies
  • Approach complex problems with analytical thinking and structured problem-solving
  • Take ownership of your work and actively seek feedback to improve
  • Collaborate effectively in a team environment and communicate ideas clearly
Skills and Experience You Have

You don't need to check every box. We will consider a combination of education and experience, including:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field
  • 0–3 years of programming experience in Python (including academic projects, internships, research, or personal projects)
  • Foundational understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software development principles
  • Demonstrated interest in artificial intelligence, automation, and applied machine learning
Preferred (Not Required)
  • Exposure to generative AI or large language models through coursework, projects, research, or internships
  • Experience working with APIs, Jupyter notebooks, or workflow automation tools
  • Familiarity with ML frameworks or libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, LangChain, or similar)
  • Internship or research experience in data engineering, machine learning, or software engineering
  • Healthcare and/or revenue cycle management (RCM) exposure through coursework, research, internships, or demonstrated interest
Why XiFin?

We're more than just a healthcare technology company—we're a team that cares about people. Here's a glimpse at what we offer:

  • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental, vision, and telehealth
  • 401(k) with company match and personalized financial coaching to support your financial future
