Associate Litigator information

What is an associate litigator?

Associate litigators are early-career attorneys who work in the litigation department of a law firm, typically under the supervision of more senior lawyers or partners. Their primary responsibilities include conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, assisting in the discovery process, preparing for trials, and sometimes representing clients in court under guidance. Associate litigators gain hands-on experience in various aspects of dispute resolution and courtroom procedures, often specializing in particular areas of law such as commercial, civil, or criminal litigation. They play a key role in supporting the legal team and ensuring thorough case preparation.

What are some typical challenges associate litigators face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Associate Litigators often juggle several cases at different stages, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. Balancing court deadlines, discovery obligations, and client communications can be demanding, especially when unexpected developments arise. Collaboration with senior attorneys and support staff is crucial to ensure all tasks are completed efficiently and to maintain high-quality work across all cases. Learning to prioritize and delegate effectively helps mitigate stress and supports professional growth in a busy litigation environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate litigator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Litigator, you need a Juris Doctor degree, bar admission, strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research platforms like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as case management software, is typically required. Outstanding communication, attention to detail, and resilience under pressure help set top performers apart. These skills and qualities are vital for building persuasive cases, meeting tight deadlines, and effectively representing clients in court.

What is the difference between Associate Litigator vs Paralegal?

AspectAssociate LitigatorParalegal
Required CredentialsJuris Doctor (JD), Bar AdmissionAssociate's degree or paralegal certificate
Work EnvironmentLaw firms, courts, corporate legal departmentsLaw firms, legal departments, courts
Job ResponsibilitiesLegal research, drafting pleadings, court appearancesLegal research, document preparation, case organization

Associate Litigators are licensed attorneys responsible for representing clients in court and handling complex legal tasks. Paralegals support attorneys with research and administrative duties but are not licensed to practice law. While both roles work closely in legal settings, Associate Litigators have more advanced responsibilities and require legal licensure.

Job description

Klein Thomas Lee & Fresard (KTLF) is seeking an Associate Attorney with 2–5 years of civil litigation experience to join our Phoenix office.

We handle product liability, class action, life sciences, medical malpractice, and commercial litigation for manufacturers, healthcare providers, and other companies, including Fortune 500 clients, in matters across the country.

Our practice is fast paced and writing intensive, with associates taking on meaningful responsibility early, including motion practice, depositions, expert development and coordination, and trial preparation.

We are looking for a strong writer with solid academic credentials, along with good communication skills and a practical, litigation focused approach. Law review, journal, or comparable writing experience is a plus.

This role is best suited for someone who is self-motivated, organized, and comfortable managing deadlines and multiple matters. Associates collaborate closely with partners, other attorneys, and paralegals, take ownership of substantive portions of cases, and handle client communication as part of their day-to-day practice.

We operate on a hybrid schedule and offer a collegial working environment. We take our work seriously, but we also recognize the need for balance in a demanding practice.

Travel is required, typically a few days per month, with additional travel for trials.

We offer competitive compensation, full benefits, and bonus eligibility.

Employment Type: Full Time
Years Experience: 3 - 5 years
Bonus/Commission: No
