Primary Purpose of the Organization

The Office of External Affairs and Military Relations serves as anadvocate and the primary liaison between Fayetteville StateUniversity and the communities in which it resides on a widevariety of local, regional, state, and federal issues. The officeserves as the principal liaison and the point of contact betweenthe university and all levels of community agencies, organizations,and government. The office also acts as a liaison to the Universityof North Carolina System's State and Federal Relations Offices inmonitoring legislation relative to higher education, working withlegislators and their staff to influence public policy, and helpingto increase awareness of the university’s educational outreach andresearch programs.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Associate Vice Chancellor for External Affairs plays a crucialrole in facilitating and providing guidance to variousorganizational initiatives related to communications, publicinvolvement, education, and community relations projects. Thisposition is responsible for building community awareness andsupport for Fayetteville State University ( FSU ) and its programsthroughout the region. Reporting to and receiving assignments fromthe Vice Chancellor for External Affairs & Military Relations,the Associate Vice Chancellor serves as a key advisor ininteractions with the university’s public stakeholders to achievethe objectives of the university.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
  • A master’s degree in political science, public relations, public administration, higher education administration, or arelated field.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in external affairs, communityrelations, public advocacy, or a related field, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Familiarity with higher education policies, trends, andchallenges, particularly related to external affairs and communityengagement.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives that enhance an organization’s reputation and foster communitysupport.
  • Strong knowledge of local, regional, state, and federal government processes, policies, and legislative frameworks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders and build consensus.
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking, representing an organization at public events, and advocating for legislativepriorities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the abilityto identify emerging issues, assess their impact, and developappropriate strategies.
