What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate in Computer Science, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate in Computer Science, you need a solid understanding of programming languages, problem-solving skills, and a relevant associate degree or certification. Familiarity with coding tools, databases, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication help you excel in collaborative and technical environments. These abilities are crucial for delivering reliable solutions, adapting to new technologies, and supporting project goals in IT settings.

What are some common challenges faced by an Associate in Computer Science when working on team-based projects?

Associates in Computer Science often encounter challenges such as coordinating with team members who have varying skill levels and communication styles. Balancing individual coding tasks with collaborative responsibilities like code reviews, pair programming, and integrating code can be demanding, especially under tight deadlines. Additionally, staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving technologies and adapting to different project management methodologies (such as Agile or Scrum) are frequent hurdles. However, these challenges also offer valuable learning opportunities and foster professional growth.

What is the difference between Associate In Computer Science vs Computer Support Specialist?

Job description

Thank you for your interest in Uncountable Implementations!
Scientific Implementation Associate
About Uncountable
Science moves slowly - not because researchers aren't brilliant, but because their tools haven't kept up. Uncountable is changing that. We build a unified R&D platform used by the world's leading chemists, material scientists, and biologists to dramatically accelerate how new products are discovered, developed, and brought to market.
Founded by engineers from MIT and Stanford, and trusted by enterprise R&D organizations across chemicals, pharmaceuticals, advanced materials, and food & beverage, Uncountable is on a mission to accelerate industrial R&D by an order of magnitude. We're a high-impact team that moves fast and gives people real ownership from day one.
The Role
This role is built for a scientist who is excited about what happens when good data infrastructure meets great research - and who wants to be on the front lines of making that happen.
As a Scientific Implementation Associate, you'll work directly with R&D teams at some of the world's leading industrial companies, helping them bring their science into the Uncountable platform. That means understanding how they design experiments, what data they generate, and how they think about their workflows - then translating all of that into a platform configuration that actually reflects their science.
It's hands-on, technically engaging work. You'll spend time restructuring and contextualizing real customer datasets, designing data models that capture complex experimental relationships, and iterating on configurations in close collaboration with scientists and engineers. Over time, you'll also take on increasing ownership of full customer implementations - from first meeting through go-live.
This is an ideal entry point for someone with a scientific background who wants to build a career at the intersection of science, software, and customer impact - without leaving their domain expertise behind.
What You'll Do
Support Scientific Implementations
  • Work alongside senior implementation team members to onboard new customers and support existing ones with new implementation initiatives
  • Learn and apply Uncountable's implementation methodology to configure the platform for individual customers' experimental workflows and data environments
  • Take on increasing ownership of implementations over time, eventually leading your own from end to end

Design and Configure Complex Scientific Workflows
  • Translate customers' experimental paradigms - how they define formulations, design experiments, record measurements, and track results - into accurate, well-structured platform configurations
  • Map scientific data structures (multi-variable formulations, hierarchical sample relationships, linked test methods) onto Uncountable's data model, making principled decisions about how to best represent each customer's science
  • Work through ambiguous, real-world data environments - customers with years of legacy spreadsheets, idiosyncratic naming conventions, and non-standard workflows - and design configurations that are both scientifically accurate and practically usable
  • Iterate on platform configurations in working sessions with customers, testing and refining until the system genuinely reflects how their team thinks about their research

Engage Directly with Customers
  • Join and eventually lead meetings with R&D scientists, data managers, and technical stakeholders
  • Build credibility through scientific fluency - understanding customers' domains well enough to ask the right questions and propose the right solutions
  • Communicate clearly and empathetically across a wide range of audiences, from bench scientists to R&D directors

Contribute to Team Knowledge
  • Help document reusable configuration patterns across domains (coatings, polymers, pharma, food science, etc.) that accelerate future implementations
  • Share observations from the field with product and engineering teams to help shape what Uncountable builds next

Your First 180 Days
Month 1: Develop deep fluency in Uncountable's platform and implementation methodology. Begin configuring experimental data for onboarded customers under the guidance of senior team members, learning how to faithfully capture end-user workflows.
Months 2-3: Start joining customer meetings and demos, contributing to scientific due diligence sessions and data requirement conversations. Take on configuration work more independently, with support from your team.
Months 4-6: Take ownership of the implementation process for a new customer. Lead meetings, set timelines, manage milestones, and advocate for any product development needed to deliver a great outcome.
Requirements
  • Scientific background: A B.S. or higher in chemistry, materials science, biology, chemical engineering, or a related field - or 1+ years of hands-on experience in a scientific or technical role
  • Data fluency: Comfort working with data in Excel or similar tools; Python or other scripting skills are a significant plus
  • Software fluency: Hands-on comfort working with scientific or technical software - whether that's an ELN, LIMS, instrument software, or data analysis tools. You don't need to be a software engineer, but you should be someone who picks up new tools quickly and isn't intimidated by data-heavy environments
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to varied audiences
  • Empathy and adaptability: The ability to understand not just what a scientist is saying, but what they actually need - and to adapt to different organizational styles and working environments
  • Curiosity: A genuine interest in software, data, and how technology can transform R&D workflows

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on lab experience - time spent running experiments gives you instant credibility with our customers
  • Exposure to data management concepts: structured spreadsheets, databases, ELNs, or LIMS
  • Experience in a customer-facing, teaching, or collaborative technical role
  • Familiarity with more than one scientific domain (e.g., organic chemistry and polymer science, or biotech and formulation)
  • Python or scripting experience for data processing or analysis

Why This Role
  • A rare entry point: This role gives scientists a path into the tech industry that doesn't require abandoning their domain expertise - you'll use your scientific knowledge every day, and deepen it across new fields
  • Fast ownership: We give people real responsibility early. Within six months, you'll be leading your own customer implementations - not just supporting them
  • Direct impact: Your work accelerates R&D at organizations developing next-generation products, from sustainable materials to pediatric cancer treatments
  • Clear career growth: Previous Scientific Implementation Associates at Uncountable have grown into Manager and Director-level roles, with exposure across scientific domains, enterprise software, and business development
  • An engineering-first culture: You'll work closely with our engineering and product teams, giving you a window into how world-class software gets built - and a voice in shaping it

Benefits
  • Competitive base salary with performance bonus and equity
  • Health and dental insurance
  • 401(k) with employer contribution (US locations)
  • Direct mentorship from experienced implementation managers and a fast path to increased ownership
