Associate Health Actuary (or Senior Actuarial Analyst)

The Amwins Benefits Division is conducting a candidate search for an Associate Health Actuary.

Serving as a member of the Benefits Divisional Support Team, this role will be a dedicated resource for actuarial services across the division, with a strong focus on self-funded group health and stop-loss analytics supporting the Amwins Self-Funded and Accident & Health Underwriting divisions. Since 2018, the Benefits Division has insourced key health actuarial initiatives. As the self-funded and stop-loss business continues to grow, the team needs additional support for recurring analyses and special projects.

This role reports to the SVP, Health Actuary, and joins a team of three actuaries. We're looking for someone who works well in a highly collaborative, analytical environment while also flourishing independently—someone excited to find the trends behind the data, tell the story, and build solutions, not just run the numbers.

Beyond technical expertise, you'll solve complex business problems, partner with experienced underwriting and business leaders, and see your work directly influence strategic decisions across the Benefits Division. This isn't a back-office actuarial role. You'll regularly explain actuarial concepts to non-actuaries, build relationships with underwriting and sales, and help train underwriters and junior producers. You should genuinely enjoy that level of collaboration.

This role will partner with the current Benefits actuarial team and have exposure to multiple operating companies across the division. Primary areas of concentration:

Self-Funded & Stop-Loss (primary focus)

• Prepare and maintain self-funded group financial analyses (SFAs),
• Analyze reinsurance and stop-loss coverage and interpret contract terms (specific/aggregate, laser terms, run-in/run-out provisions).
• Evaluate alternative funding arrangements and develop premium equivalent rates.
• Validate medical claim trend rates and stop-loss pricing trends.
• Prepare IBNR/reserve estimation and perform reserve adequacy testing.

Pricing / Underwriting

• Review and development of manual rates.
• Evaluate and support development of new products and underwriting methodologies.
• Benefits valuation and plan changes based on utilization and network assumptions.
• Health care renewal analysis, pricing and trend analyses, claims/premium projections.
• Develop and maintain strong documentation on all modeling, process changes, and analyses performed.
• Support peer review and quality control of team analyses and deliverables as the actuarial team grows.

Benchmarking

• Analyze block-of-business experience data against carrier data, industry trends, or studies.
• Assess impact of additional cost containment services and support performance guarantee determination.

Communication & Collaboration

• Communicate actuarial findings and recommendations clearly to non-actuarial audiences, including sales, underwriting, and leadership.
• Build and maintain working relationships with underwriters, producers, and broker partners across the division.
• Support internal training and education for underwriters and junior producers on actuarial concepts, pricing methodology, and stop-loss/self-funded fundamentals.
• Represent the actuarial team in cross-functional discussions and, at times, client- or broker-facing conversations.
• Collaborate across multiple operating companies within the Benefits Division, helping translate sophisticated actuarial analysis into practical business solutions that support growth and client success.

• Bachelor's degree in a related field (actuarial science, mathematics, data science, or another major with quantitative course work).
• Recent or near ASA with not less than 5 years of health actuarial experience; self-funded and/or stop-loss experience strongly preferred.
• This is a highly collaborative role requiring regular interaction with sales, underwriting, brokers, and executive leadership. Candidates should genuinely enjoy explaining actuarial concepts, building relationships, and developing others—not simply performing technical analysis.
• Experience in data mining, statistical analysis, and data transformation/manipulation.
• Expertise in database software such as SQL and/or Python. Proficiency in Power BI or Tableau is a plus.
• Extensive use of Microsoft Office products (especially Excel with VBA and PowerPoint).
• Strong math skills and the ability to solve and understand analytical problems and solutions.
• Able to prioritize workload and work within tight timeframes when required.
• Able to work within a team environment but also organize an individual workload.
• Understanding of self-funded group health, stop-loss, medical underwriting, and the insurance industry.
• Ability to quickly learn new software programs.
• Ability to tell a succinct, meaningful, and actionable story with data.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Must be a team player and able to work in a fast-paced, exciting environment.
