Job description

Associate Geologist

JP Morgan is seeking a geologist/geophysicist to join its Technical Transaction Team "TTT" that is housed within the Energy Investment Banking Practice in Houston, Texas.

Job Summary

As a Geologist within the Investment Banking Technical Transaction Team, you will be a key player in our business strategy and execution. You will work in a co-active role alongside engineers and corporate finance partners. You will participate in the execution of technical evaluation of oil and gas assets across Upstream, Midstream and Downstream sectors and will contribute to the geology discipline for the team. You will be involved in al relevant subjects of geology that are include, but not limited to log interpretation, landing zone analysis, core analysis and diagnostic map creation. You will identify and characterize geologic concepts such as seismology, structural geology, basin & depositional modeling, log & core derived regional reservoir mapping & 2D & 3D seismic interpretation 

Job Responsibilities

  • Quantify the potential for future drilling locations for oil and gas assets across domestic and international reservoirs
  • Develop deep technical understanding and collaborate closely with engineers
  • Identify and determine trends, risks associated with oil and gas development across domestic and international areas
  • Identify sub-surface complexities and uncertainties that impact operational results and well productivity
  • Characterize geologic concepts including regional, basin wide mapping, log and core analysis
  • Play a lead role in data room, marketing and pitch efforts alongside senior bankers

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Master's degree in Geology
  • Minimum of 3 years in industry at an operator or A&D banking
  • SIE, Series 79 and Series 63 licenses to be obtained if not licensed shortly after onboarding  
  • Experience with industry software (Petra, ArcGIS, Geo Graphix, Microsoft Office, Landmark)
  • Highly proficient in key subjects of geophysical mapping, database creation and characterization of domestic and global conventional and unconventional plays 

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Establish and maintain large databases as specific to the geology role
  • Has expert knowledge of ArcGis, QGis and ability to operate within geo-spatial software to perform inventory, rock quality mapping
  • Ability to compute land based statistics such as ownership interests & acreage
  • Prior banking or A&D group experience with an operator
  • Highly motivated and demonstrated ability to have positive influence within the workplace and externally with clients
