What does an associate engineer do?

An Associate Engineer is an entry-level professional who assists in designing, developing, and maintaining engineering projects. They work under the supervision of senior engineers, helping with technical tasks such as drafting plans, conducting tests, and collecting data. Their responsibilities may also include troubleshooting issues, preparing reports, and ensuring projects comply with industry standards. Associate Engineers typically work in fields like civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB, and sometimes certifications like EIT (Engineer-in-Training), are commonly required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are soft skills that help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for successfully executing technical tasks, collaborating on projects, and supporting senior engineers in achieving organizational goals.

What are some typical challenges associate engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to real-world engineering teams?

Associate Engineers often find that moving from academic projects to professional engineering teams involves adapting to faster-paced timelines, working within established processes, and collaborating with colleagues from various disciplines. Unlike academic work, where projects might be more theoretical or self-directed, real-world engineering requires balancing multiple tasks, following industry standards, and communicating effectively to ensure project success. Over time, most associate engineers develop strong problem-solving and teamwork skills, which are essential for advancement and continued success in the field.

What is the difference between Associate Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectAssociate EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate degree or diploma, some certificationsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, licensure often not required initially
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, technical support, manufacturing, constructionDesign, analysis, research, manufacturing, often more autonomous
Employer & Industry UsageConstruction firms, manufacturing companies, government agenciesEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotive industries

Associate Engineering roles typically require an associate degree and focus on technical support and implementation tasks. Mechanical Engineering positions usually demand a bachelor's degree and involve design, analysis, and problem-solving responsibilities. Both roles are essential in engineering projects but differ in education level, scope, and responsibilities.

What can I do with an associate engineering degree?

An associate engineering degree prepares individuals for technician, technologist, or support roles in fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering. Graduates can work in design, testing, maintenance, or manufacturing environments, often using tools like CAD software and adhering to safety standards. The degree can also serve as a stepping stone to further education or certifications in specialized engineering areas.

What is the salary of an associate engineer?

The salary of an associate engineer typically ranges from $60,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced associates or those with specialized skills can earn higher wages.

Responsibilities

The Cloud Engineer is a senior technical role responsible for architecting, implementing, and managing cloud infrastructure supporting U.S. Army IT managed services. This position bridges legacy on-premises environments with modern cloud-native architectures, ensuring secure, resilient, and cost-effective operations across a hybrid IT landscape.ย

This is a remote-eligible position. Local candidates in the Roanoke and Radford, Virginia area are encouraged to apply, and work may be performed locally for those who preferย an on-site or hybrid arrangement. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on cloud engineering expertise, strong DoD cybersecurity compliance knowledge, and the ability to support mission-critical Army IT services across enterprise data centers and cloud-hosted environments.ย

Program Backgroundย

The supported organization is one of the longest-standing IT reimbursable Government-to-Government services providers within the United States Army, functioning as a full-spectrum IT managed service provider. The portfolio of services this role directly supports includes:ย

  • Infrastructure Servicesย
  • Platform Servicesย
  • Managed Servicesย
  • Common Servicesย
  • Application Servicesย
  • Cybersecurity Servicesย

Services are delivered across Army Enterprise Data Centers (AEDCs) CONUS and OCONUS, as well as withinย cARMYย cloud enclaves hosted by commercial cloud service providers.ย

Key Responsibilitiesย

  • Design, deploy, and manage cloud infrastructure on FedRAMP-authorized platforms (AWS GovCloud, Microsoft Azure Government, Google Cloud for Government) supporting Army workloads.ย
  • Lead technical execution of cloud migration efforts including workload assessment, lift-and-shift operations, re-platforming, and cloud-native refactoring.ย
  • Support on-premises infrastructure environments including servers, storage, networking, and virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V) as part of hybrid cloud operations.ย
  • Develop and enforce cloud governance policies covering IAM, resource provisioning guardrails, tagging standards, and cost controls.ย
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Azure Bicep, or equivalent tools to automate provisioning and configuration management.ย
  • Maintain high availability, disaster recovery (DR), and business continuity plans (BCP) for both cloud and data center environments.ย
  • Oversee hybrid network connectivity including SD-WAN, AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, and VPN solutions between on-premises and cloud environments.ย
  • Monitor infrastructure performance and security posture using tools such as CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Splunk, or similar SIEM/observability platforms.ย
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to implement NIST 800-53 controls, continuous monitoring (ConMon), RMF processes, and FedRAMP compliance requirements.ย
  • Support FinOps practices including cloud cost analysis, rightsizing recommendations, and budget reporting for reimbursable IT programs.ย
  • Provide technical documentation including architecture diagrams, runbooks, migration playbooks, and system security plans (SSPs).ย
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to workforce upskilling as the organization transitions to cloud-first operations.ย
Qualifications

Required:

  • 5-8 years of hands-on cloud engineering experience, with demonstrated involvement in cloud migration or enterprise IT modernization programs.ย
  • CompTIA Security+ CE certification - required (DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level II compliant).ย

  • Active DoD Secret Clearance - required at time of hire.ย
  • Experience on at least one FedRAMP-authorized cloud platform (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, or Google Cloud for Government).ย
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or equivalent).ย
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals: BGP, VLANs, SD-WAN, firewall policy, and hybrid cloud connectivity.ย
  • Experience with virtualization and container technologies including VMware, Kubernetes, and Docker.ย
  • Knowledge of NIST SP 800-53, FISMA, RMF, and DoD cloud security requirements.ย
  • U.S. Citizenship required.ย
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field required. Relevant certifications and DoD cloud engineering experience may be considered in lieu of a portion of the education requirement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity withย cARMYย cloud enclaves or Army Enterprise Data Center (AEDC) environments.ย
  • Experience with DISA STIGs, DoD Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide (CC SRG), or IL4/IL5 authorization processes.ย
