Associate Engineer I information

What is an Associate Engineer I?

An Associate Engineer I is an entry-level engineering professional who assists with the planning, design, development, and implementation of engineering projects. Typically, this role involves working under the supervision of more experienced engineers, performing technical tasks, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Associate Engineer I positions are common across various fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. This role is ideal for recent graduates or those with limited professional experience, providing a foundation for career growth and development within the engineering sector.

What are some common challenges an Associate Engineer I might encounter when transitioning from academia to a professional engineering team?

As an Associate Engineer I, you may find that adapting to real-world project timelines and the collaborative nature of engineering teams differs significantly from academic work. You'll often need to balance multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with senior engineers, project managers, and other departments. Learning company-specific tools and adhering to established processes can also be challenging at first, but these skills develop quickly with experience and mentorship. Embracing feedback and proactively seeking guidance can help smooth this transition and accelerate your professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Engineer I, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Engineer I, you typically need a bachelor's degree in engineering, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and foundational knowledge of engineering principles. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software, engineering modeling systems, and relevant industry standards or certifications is often required. Strong teamwork, effective communication, and attention to detail are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate project execution, effective collaboration, and adherence to safety and quality standards in engineering environments.

What is the difference between Associate Engineer I vs Mechanical Engineer?

CriteriaAssociate Engineer IMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field; entry-level certificationsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; professional licensure often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and support roles in engineering teams; often in office or lab settingsDesign, analysis, and manufacturing in industrial or corporate settings; fieldwork less common
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in engineering firms, manufacturing, and tech companies for entry-level rolesCommon in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and industrial sectors

The main difference is that Associate Engineer I is an entry-level position requiring a bachelor's degree and basic certifications, focusing on supporting engineering projects. Mechanical Engineer typically requires more experience or advanced degrees, with responsibilities including design, analysis, and project management. Both roles are common in manufacturing and engineering industries, but Mechanical Engineers often have greater responsibilities and specialization.

Job description

Our Team:

Semtech's Signal Integrity Products group designs analog and mixed-signal Integrated Circuits used in high performance optical and electrical networks. Our high-speed chips enable systems such as: hyperscale data centres, 5G wireless, fibre-to-the-home networks and ultra-fast connectivity within AI networks.

Whenever you are using the internet, from your phone or computer, your data is likely passing through one or more of the many high-speed analog mixed-signal chips created by IC Design teams at Semtech. Our experience and expertise ensure that we are always pushing the boundaries of networking speed and providing the best experience for our end users.

Job Summary:

As an Associate Analog IC Design Engineer, you will design, verify, and evaluate high-speed (200Gbps and beyond) analog circuits utilizing leading-edge CMOS and BiCMOS technologies. You will be using advanced EDA/simulation tools and will have the opportunity to contribute to improving design best-practices and methodologies.

The successful candidate will be mentored by senior engineers, enabling them to grow technically and professionally. Additional professional development opportunities include a mix of virtual learning, in-person courses, and technical conferences.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and simulation of high-speed analog mixed-signal IC products from concept to manufacturing
  • Work proactively with the extended team to implement new designs to specification and support existing products
  • Capture and share simulation results, measurements and methodologies
  • Preparation of technical reviews and product documentation
  • Involvement in the lab evaluation of high-speed analog circuits
  • Plan and report progress of work

Qualifications:

  • Minimum BASc degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering with significant IC design content (relevant work experience in the field preferred).
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Design experience in high-speed CMOS and/or BiCMOS, appreciation of high-speed/RF design and layout concepts, device models, parasitics and other non-idealities affecting circuit performance.
  • Good understanding of analog circuit layout best practices (i.e. matching, parasitic effects, reliability, electromigration, etc.).
  • Thorough understanding of analog circuit theory, transmission lines, and device fundamentals.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills and an ability to excel in a dynamic team environment which values growth and innovation.
  • Experience with analog CAD tools, such as Cadence Virtuoso or equivalent. RF modelling (i.e. HFSS, EMX, etc.), Matlab / Simulink, or system modelling software knowledge is a plus.
  • Familiarity of high-speed components such as VCOs, PLLs, wide-band amplifiers and data converters is a strong asset.
  • Hands-on experience with high-speed lab equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers and oscilloscopes coupled with knowledge of scripting languages such as Python are considered assets.
