Compliance Engineer
Location: On-site in Bradenton, FL

About This Role
The Compliance Engineer is responsible for supporting regulatory, certification, and environmental compliance activities for commercial fire alarm and life safety products. This role manages routine certification projects, sustaining engineering changes, and maintenance of existing product approvals while working under the guidance of senior compliance personnel. The position works closely with engineering, quality, product management, manufacturing, and external certification agencies to ensure products comply with applicable regulatory, certification, and environmental requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and execute routine product certification and approval projects, including product modifications, sustaining engineering changes, and certification updates.
  • Maintain existing product certifications and approvals by evaluating engineering changes, coordinating testing activities, and preparing required documentation for certification agencies.
  • Support compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes, standards, and approvals including UL, ULC, FM, NFPA, EMC, and other Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements.
  • Assess the compliance impact of component substitutions, firmware updates, design revisions, manufacturing changes, and supplier changes.
  • Coordinate certification testing and evaluation activities with internal engineering teams, external test laboratories, and certification organizations.
  • Prepare and submit certification documentation, engineering change summaries, technical files, test plans, and approval applications for routine certification projects.
  • Participate in product design reviews and identify potential compliance risks early in the development process.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and product documentation for compliance-related requirements.
  • Support EMC and RF compliance activities, including FCC, Industry Canada, and CE requirements.
  • Support environmental compliance programs including RoHS, REACH, PFAS reporting, TSCA, Proposition 65, and other applicable environmental regulations.
  • Collect, review, and maintain supplier material declarations, certificates of compliance, and environmental compliance records.
  • Maintain certification files, technical documentation, approval records, and compliance databases.
  • Monitor changes to applicable codes, standards, regulations, and certification requirements and communicate potential impacts to stakeholders.
  • Support regulatory audits, factory inspections, certification maintenance activities, and corrective action initiatives.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, manufacturing, sourcing, and product management teams to ensure ongoing product compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Escalate complex compliance issues, certification challenges, and regulatory concerns to senior compliance personnel as appropriate.

  • One to two years of engineering, regulatory compliance, product certification, quality, testing, manufacturing, or related technical experience - relevant internship, co-op, or project experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles and product development processes.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical standards, specifications, drawings, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and Outlook.
    Experience with commercial fire alarm, life safety, building systems, industrial controls, or other regulated products.
  • Familiarity with certification and testing processes involving UL, ULC, FM, NFPA, IEC, FCC, CE, or similar standards organizations.
  • Exposure to product compliance, regulatory affairs, certification engineering, quality systems, or laboratory testing.
  • Basic knowledge of global environmental regulations including RoHS, REACH, Proposition 65, PFAS, and TSCA requirements.
  • Experience working with external test laboratories or certification organizations.
  • Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), document control, or engineering change management systems.
