What does an associate electrical engineer do?

An Associate Electrical Engineer assists in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components, often working under the supervision of senior engineers. Their responsibilities may include creating technical drawings, performing calculations, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring projects meet safety standards and regulations. They often work on projects related to power generation, electronics, telecommunications, or building electrical systems. This entry-level role is ideal for recent graduates or those with limited experience, providing a foundation for career advancement in electrical engineering.

What are common projects and responsibilities for an associate electrical engineer during the first year?

As an Associate Electrical Engineer, you can expect to work on tasks such as drafting electrical schematics, assisting with circuit design, supporting senior engineers in troubleshooting, and performing site visits to ensure compliance with specifications. Early projects often involve collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as mechanical engineers and project managers, to help deliver solutions on time and within budget. You'll likely use industry-standard software tools and participate in regular team meetings to discuss progress and address challenges. Over time, you will gain increasing responsibility as you demonstrate your technical skills and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate electrical engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Electrical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, a relevant bachelor's degree, and foundational experience with circuit design and analysis. Description:

ASG Power designs and builds high-quality custom electrical enclosures and control panels across a range of industries including water/wastewater, oil and gas, manufacturing, and the rapidly evolving renewable energy sector. As a UL 508A certified shop with capabilities in UL 98B and UL 1741, we bring cutting-edge solutions to life — from PLC control panels to power distribution panels for PV and hydrogen fuel cell systems.

As we expand our footprint in the renewables and data center markets, we’re looking for talented individuals to join our growing team and be part of an exciting new phase of innovation and product development.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an Electrical AutoCAD Draftsman to bridge the gap between our engineering and sales departments. This is an ideal role for an early- to mid-career CAD professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and wants to play a key role in shaping new product initiatives and capturing new markets.

This is more than just a drafting role — it’s a dynamic, cross-functional position that offers room to grow, learn, and make a significant impact in a company on the move.

Requirements:

This role requires working on-site at our office five days per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sales Support:
    • Create high-quality 2D/3D concept sketches and layout drawings for quoting purposes.
    • Collaborate with sales engineers to visualize customer needs and present clear, professional proposals quickly and accurately.
    • Assist in the development of sales collateral through technical illustrations and specifications.
  • Engineering Support:
    • Update and maintain mechanical and electrical CAD drawings in support of panel design and production.
    • Interpret engineering notes, schematics, and component specifications to produce accurate design documents.
    • Contribute to the design of PLC control panels, custom power distribution systems, and other specialized equipment.
  • CAD Management:
    • Help maintain and improve our CAD symbol library and drawing standards.
    • Collaborate on the development of new drafting and modeling processes for increased efficiency and quality.

What You’ll Work On:

  • Custom electrical enclosures for a range of industries
  • Power distribution and control panels for renewable energy systems (PV, hydrogen)
  • Disconnects, combiners, recombiners, fused disconnects
  • Bus bar systems and high-current applications
  • Drafting and visualizing concepts for fast-paced quoting and prototyping

Qualifications:

  • Required:
    • 2+ years of experience in drafting, CAD, or related technical support role
    • Proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and AutoCAD Inventor
    • Strong ability to read, interpret, and create electrical schematics and mechanical layout drawings
    • Technical school training in drafting/CAD, an associate’s degree in engineering technology, or similar background
    • Exposure to industrial electrical systems and components
  • Preferred:
    • Experience with electrical panel design or industrial equipment
    • Familiarity with UL standards (UL 508A, 98B, 1741)
    • Prior work in fast-paced or custom manufacturing environments

Why You’ll Love Working With Us:

  • Be part of cutting-edge product development for the renewables and data center markets
  • Collaborate with a driven, experienced team where your ideas matter
  • Work on diverse, technically challenging projects with real-world impact
  • Opportunities for growth, learning, and cross-training
  • A workplace culture that values innovation, speed, and quality
