Job description

SMS Equipment is seeking a knowledgeable and business-focused Senior Legal Counsel / Associate General Counsel to support a broad range of legal matters across the organization. In this role, you will provide practical, risk-based legal advice that enables business objectives while protecting the company’s interests. You will work closely with internal stakeholders across operations, finance, HR, and leadership to support contracts, governance, and regulatory compliance. This is an excellent opportunity for a collaborative legal professional who thrives in a dynamic, operational environment.

Work Location: Acheson, AB
Annual Salary:  Competitive and commensurate with experience
Work Arrangement: On-site
Schedule: Monday to Friday

What You’ll Do

  • Provide legal advice and guidance on a wide range of corporate, commercial, and operational matters
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including vendor, customer, and service contracts
  • Support business leaders in identifying legal risks and developing mitigation strategies
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies across jurisdictions
  • Assist with dispute resolution, including managing external counsel where required
  • Support corporate governance activities, including documentation, filings, and policy development
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (HR, Finance, Operations) to provide timely legal support
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of legal processes, templates, and best practices

What You Bring

You are a qualified legal professional with strong experience in corporate and commercial law, combined with the ability to provide practical, business-oriented advice. You bring sound judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to build trusted relationships across the organization. Other requirements include:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited institution
  • Membership in good standing with the Alberta Law Society
  • 7+ years’ experience in corporate/commercial law
  • Experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements
  • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance and risk management practices
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Assets:

  • Experience working in-house or supporting industrial, construction, or mining sectors
