Job description

SUMMARY

The UPC mission is: We are a family of communities joining Jesus to transform our lives and the lives of neighbors at the University of Washington, in our neighborhoods, and all around the world.The Associate Director of Global Outreach provides leadership, strategy, and pastoral oversight for UPCโ€™s ministry with the international community in Seattle also known as โ€œGlobal Friendsโ€. The position focuses on fostering a welcoming and Christcentered community that supports spiritual formation, connection, and integration into the life of the church. This role collaborates closely with Outreach leadership and key partners to develop and implement programs, events, and pathways that reflect UPCโ€™s commitment to global culture and discipleship. The Associate Director oversees volunteers, coordinates cross-cultural initiatives, and ensures consistent, effective communication and engagement across ministry areas, helping the international community feel a sense of belonging, grow in faith, and connect meaningfully within the broader UPC community.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Partner with UPC leadership to develop and implement strategies that advance integration and embody UPCโ€™s value of Global Culture.
  • Provide vision, leadership, and execution for the Global Friends ministry, aligning programs and initiatives with UPCโ€™s mission and outreach goals.
  • Plan and lead retreats, leadership gatherings, training seminars, and other key events that support ministry growth and effectiveness.
  • Oversee and enhance weekly programs for adults and children, cultivating a safe, welcoming, and relational environment where internationals can experience care, community, and opportunities to explore faith in Jesus.
  • Lead spiritual formation efforts for internationals and volunteers, with a longterm vision of developing a thriving fellowship that integrates fully into the broader UPC community.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Outreach, provide care through prayer, encouragement, visitation, and wise counsel, and conflict resolution for participants and volunteers.
  • Recruit, equip, and support volunteers, fostering a healthy and sustainable ministry team.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with local and global ministry organizations (e.g., China Outreach Ministries, Bridges International, International Friendship House) to maximize shared impact and resource alignment.
  • Coordinate regularly with UPCโ€™s Language Institute to ensure alignment, consistency, and collaboration in serving shared communities.
  • Partner with the Director of Outreach to develop supportive programs for individuals returning to home countries.
  • Lead the planning and execution of key Global Friends events, including seasonal celebrations such as Christmas, Lunar New Year, and Easter.
  • Oversee ministry communications by collaborating with the Communications team, managing web and promotional updates, creating engaging content for the congregation and participants.
  • Participate in corporate worship and engage in UPC staff and department meetings as part of the broader ministry team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Associate Director of Global Outreach (Global Friends)

Reports To: Director of Outreach

Friday (Some Evenings and Weekends)

Job Class: Associate Director

Pay Range: $55,000 - $65,000/year (1.0FTE)

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Deep and growing faith in Jesus Christ and a theology consistent with the mission of UPC. Has read and understood the โ€œEssential Tenetsโ€ and agreed to support them in the work they do at UPC.
  • Cross-cultural competency and awareness.
  • A working understanding of healthy missions and service practices. A demonstrated ability to equip others in missional living practices.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience leading a church-based outreach ministry program, community development, or human services initiatives.
  • A bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent/relevant work experience. Preferred area of study in a ministry field, human services, social work, community development or equivalent in a related field.
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Physical ability to walk stairs, work on feet or sit for extended time, and lift 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • This job regularly requires sitting, using hands to handle or feel, and talking and hearing.
SPECIAL/OTHER
  • This position requires occasional regional travel, overnights, and a flexible schedule to respond to ministry needs.
