What is an associate developer?

Associate Developers are entry-level software professionals who assist in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications under the guidance of more experienced developers. They typically work as part of a development team, contributing to projects by writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in code reviews. Associate Developers are often recent graduates or individuals with limited professional programming experience, and this role serves as a stepping stone to more advanced positions in software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate developer?

To thrive as an Associate Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, alongside a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic knowledge of databases is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly with team members help you stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial to efficiently contribute to software projects, collaborate effectively, and support the delivery of high-quality code.

What are some typical challenges faced by associate developers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world software development?

Associate Developers often find that moving from academic or personal projects to professional software development introduces new challenges, such as working within larger codebases, adhering to established coding standards, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Snyder & Associates, Inc. is a well-established civil engineering consulting firm known for delivering thoughtful, high-quality solutions to public and private clients. As our site development work continues to expand, we are adding a Site Development Civil Engineer to our team in St. Joseph, Missouri.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer who wants hands-on experience, meaningful project involvement, and direct exposure to clients. You'll contribute to a wide range of site development projects while building the technical and professional skills needed to grow your career.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
  • Support the planning, design, and development of site development projects for public and private clients
  • Assist in preparing site plans, grading, drainage, and utility designs
  • Contribute to project scopes, schedules, and cost estimates
  • Collaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, and internal design teams
  • Stay involved throughout the full project lifecycle - from concept through construction
  • Participate in problem-solving and design discussions to deliver practical, high-quality solutions

Qualifications
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (EI)
  • 2+ years of experience in consulting or related civil engineering work
  • Interest or experience in site development and site plan design
  • Progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure (Missouri and/or Kansas preferred)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • A team-oriented mindset with the ability to contribute independently

Why Snyder & Associates?

  • Unlike firms driven by private equity or absentee investors, we set our own priorities - focusing on quality work, timely delivery, and strong client relationships
  • Work on a variety of site development projects that shape growing communities
  • Gain hands-on experience and client exposure early in your career
  • A collaborative environment where mentorship and development are a priority
  • Opportunities for career growth and increasing responsibility
  • A stable, well-respected firm with a strong regional presence

Working from our Gladstone (Kansas City Northland) office, this role offers opportunity to grow your career in the vibrant Kansas City metro.
