What is an associate design engineer?

Associate Design Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in the development, planning, and creation of new products or systems. They work under the supervision of senior engineers, contributing to drafting designs, creating prototypes, and conducting tests to ensure functionality and quality. Their responsibilities often include preparing technical documentation, using CAD software, and collaborating with other departments to ensure design specifications are met. This role provides foundational experience for a career in engineering design.

What are some common challenges faced by associate design engineers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Associate Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new design software, understanding project specifications, and effectively communicating with cross-functional teams. It's common to feel overwhelmed by the technical complexity of projects or the pace of deliverables. Due to our continuous expansion, we're seeking talented individuals to strengthen our team. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mold Tooling Engineering Manager at our new Stoughton MA facility.

Job Summary: Position is responsible for providing senior-level mold design, tooling, and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) expertise and department leadership in support of medical cable assembly and connector products. The position supports both new product development and sustaining engineering activities, with specific focus on injection-molded connector components, TPU/TPE over-molded parts, and low-pressure molded interim shot tooling.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead and manage an internal tool shop with toolmakers and mold design engineers on staff.
  • Lead DFM review on new product designs, identifying draft requirements, parting lines, undercuts, shut-offs, wall transitions, and tooling risks.
  • Design and/or review injection molds for medical connector components, over-molded strain reliefs, and cable assemblies.
  • Support tooling concepts including gating, venting, cooling, steel conditions, surface finishes, slides, lifters, and other mold actions.
  • Partner with product engineering to ensure designs are manufacturable, robust, and cost-effective.
  • Interface with external domestic and offshore mold shops during tool design, build, debug, and qualification.
  • Assist sustaining engineering teams with tooling-related issues, yield improvements, and design updates.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in mold design, tooling, or toolmaking.
  • Associates' degree or higher in engineering, manufacturing, or related technical field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
  • Working proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD software.
  • Ability to conduct effective DFM and tooling feasibility reviews with engineering and suppliers.
  • Strong background in medical device or regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience working with global manufacturing partners.
  • This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization. Applicants must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • Experience in medical connector and cable assembly mold design, tooling engineering, or toolmaking.
  • Background as a journeyman toolmaker or significant shop floor experience.
  • Familiarity with medical validation environments (IQ/OQ/PQ awareness).

What We Offer:

  • An opportunity to join a growing team dedicated to making a difference.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits program, including medical, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, 401(K), PTO, HSA, FSA, employee discounts, life insurance, and employee activities.
