Job description

What We're Looking For
This position supports HNTB's Digital Transformation Solutions Group as part of the Electrical Integrated Energy Solutions team, working closely with the Virtual Design and Construction team. The Design Engineer focuses primarily on the development and preparation of plans, drawings, and design deliverables for transportation-related infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on roadway lighting, airfield lighting, power distribution systems, and water facility infrastructure, while also supporting the use of automated, parametric, and data-driven design tools.
The role emphasizes collaboration with designers, engineers, Virtual Design and Construction professionals, and other project teams to deliver high-quality plans, drawings, and value engineering solutions. The Design Engineer contributes to the application of rule-based and data-driven approaches, where appropriate, to improve design quality, efficiency, and coordination for roadway lighting and power distribution systems supporting airfields, landside facilities, roadways, and lift stations, while enhancing constructability throughout project delivery.
This position requires strong technical expertise, domain experience, and platform proficiency, along with the ability to translate design intent and constraints into practical design solutions. The Design Engineer works closely with designers, engineers, and project teams to develop deliverables and, where applicable, support tools and workflows that integrate seamlessly into existing design and construction processes and align with the Electrical Integrated Energy Solutions team.

  • Develops BIM workflows and oversees model coordination and visualization.
  • Implements cutting-edge technologies and integrates with project systems.
  • Leads automation initiatives and data analytics for construction insights.
  • Provides technical leadership and mentorship across VDC teams.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to align digital deliverables with project goals.
  • Ensures quality, scalability, and compliance of digital outputs.
  • Manages tasks and budgets.
  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert on pursuit teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:
  • Associate's degree or certificate in computer-aided design (CAD), BIM, VDC, or a related field and 7 years of relevant experience, or
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field and 5 years of related experience, or
  • In lieu of education, 9 years of relevant experience.

What You'll Bring:
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer, Revit, and Bluebeam Revu, with experience supporting Building Information Modeling workflows.
  • Experience preparing design plans, drawings, and construction documents for transportation or infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with roadway, airfield, or utility-related design, including lighting and power systems.
  • Ability to collaborate with designers, engineers, and Virtual Design and Construction teams to support coordinated models and deliverables
  • Understanding of Building Information Modeling standards, file management, and model coordination practices
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
