Description
The Engineering Technician provides office and field work related to civil engineering. This
position reports to the Assistant County Engineer and is located in Watford City, ND. The
typical schedule is Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, with occasional after hours and
weekend work. Level and salary commensurate with experience.
Essential Job Functions
• Under the supervision of the Assistant County Engineer, acts as an inspector on
construction projects.
• Monitors and keeps accurate, daily records of contractor operations to assure project
is built according to plans and specifications.
• Measures, computes and documents pay items to ensure proper payment for work
done under the contract.
• Accepts applications and issues permits for the Engineering Department including
approach, utility, and overweight/oversize truck permits.
• Reviews applications and forms for accuracy, explain permit procedures, fees, and
determine missing documents before accepting application.
• Explain and answer questions for developers, contractors, and residents regarding
application process for obtaining permits, inspection process, and other procedures.
• Receive, verify, and record fees for permits and/or applications.
• Maintains accurate files, records, and accurately enter information into permitting
system.
• Assists with permit inspections to ensure compliance with approved permit and
relevant standards, as assigned.
• Coordinates permits with other internal and external government entities.
• Works with Engineers to assure that proposed work in the right of way meets County
policies, procedures, and standards.
• Review preliminary permit plans to ensure required information has been received and
delegates plan reviews to Engineers, as needed.
• Works with permit applicant to resolve submitted items that do not meet County
standards, policies, and/or procedures.
• Assists with coordinating and processing large section line and/or road improvements
by private entities.
• Perform other job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED
• Associate in Applied Science in the field of Engineering Technology or related field
• 2 years' experience in Engineering, Design, Surveying or related field
• Valid Driver's License
• Must be able to report to Watford City, ND daily at required schedule time
• Extensive knowledge of computers, computer programs, scanning equipment and
various other office machines
• Ability to use CAD systems
• Knowledge of construction management
• Extensive organizational skills and communication skills
• Must be a self-starter and goal oriented
• Physical requirements and working conditions:
• Able to handle exposure to noise and extreme weather conditions
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, kneel, stoop, sit, walk extensively
