Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School (AoH) is seeking a skilled and mission-driven Math Teachers to join our academic team serving adult learners across Washington, DC. This role is ideal for an educator who thrives in nontraditional classrooms, values relationship-based teaching, and understands that adult learners bring lived experience, responsibilities, and resilience into the classroom.

Our Math Teachers play a critical role in helping learners build foundational numeracy, master GED-level math content, and develop the confidence and problem-solving skills needed for postsecondary education, training, and career pathways.

About the Role

The Math Teachers are responsible for delivering in-person mathematics instruction to adult learners preparing for High School Equivalency exams (GED or National External Diploma Program) and strengthening quantitative skills applicable to real-world and workforce contexts. Instruction spans multiple instructional levels and requires intentional differentiation, data-driven decision-making, and culturally responsive practices.

This role is both instructional and relational. Successful Math Teachers at AoH create classrooms that are structured, engaging, and affirming — where adult learners feel respected, supported, and challenged.

What You’ll Teach

Instruction may include math content across Levels 1–5, such as:

  • Foundational numeracy: whole numbers, basic operations, fractions, decimals
  • Applied math: percentages, ratios, proportions, measurement, and integers
  • Pre-algebra and algebra: expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, and systems
  • Geometry and data analysis: graphs, probability, statistics, and real-world problem solving
  • GED-aligned mathematical reasoning: application of math concepts to postsecondary and workforce scenarios
     

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Learner Support
  • Design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned math lessons that meet GED and adult education requirements
  • Differentiate instruction to support learners with varying academic levels, learning styles, and educational gaps
  • Use formative and summative assessments to monitor learner progress and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Integrate technology, contextualized learning, and real-world math applications into daily instruction
  • Build learner confidence, persistence, and problem-solving skills
Classroom & Program Support
  • Create a classroom environment that is inclusive, respectful, and supportive of adult learners
  • Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and instructional documentation
  • Collaborate with Student Support Services to address barriers impacting academic success
  • Provide guidance to volunteer tutors or co-teachers supporting math instruction
  • Participate in intake, orientation, outreach, or seminar support as needed
Collaboration & Professional Growth
  • Collaborate with academic leadership and instructional colleagues to align curriculum and instruction
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional learning communities, and peer coaching
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to adult education, math instruction, and culturally responsive teaching
  • Stay current on GED testing updates, curriculum standards, and instructional best practices

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Education, Adult Education, or a related field
  • Experience teaching math in a secondary, adult education, or alternative education setting
  • Strong instructional delivery, classroom management, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, adult learning theory, and culturally responsive teaching
Preferred
  • Master’s degree in Education, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience teaching GED Math or working with adult learners
  • Familiarity with Common Core or College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults
  • Experience with CASAS, Accuplacer, or similar assessments
  • Experience supporting learners with disabilities or special learning needs

Salary

This position is compensated within a salary band of $63,565 – $97,268, with placement determined by education, experience, and internal equity.
