JOB SUMMARY
UT Southwestern is actively seeking a Radiation Safety Technician to support the safe use of radioactive materials by ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and established environmental, health, and safety standards. We are looking for someone with a strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a regulated radiation environment while following established policies, procedures, and compliance requirements.
This role works with department specialists and Leadership to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials through licensure, registration, and compliance with accepted environmental, health, and safety standards; responsible for picking up radioactive waste from research labs and clinical areas and also for receiving and delivering of radioactive materials packages (receipt, lab delivery, shipment). The position also provides radiation safety support for clinical radiopharmaceutical therapies and emergency response.
Work Location: Dallas Campus; travel to and from other UTSW locations.
Shift Requirement: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday; occasional evenings and weekends when needed.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
  • Education
    • Bachelor's Degree in related field or
    • Associate's Degree in science related field or
    • High School Diploma.
  • Experience
    • No experience with Bachelor's degree or
    • 2 years experience in general safety or hazardous waste fields related experience with Associate's degree or
    • 2 years military experience and specific job-related training or other relevant previous employment experience may be substituted for Associate's degree or
    • 4 years experience in general safety or hazardous waste fields related experience.
JOB DUTIES
  • Helps ensure the safe use of radioactive materials through licensure, registration, and compliance with accepted environmental, health, and safety standards. Maintains knowledge/expertise on existing/proposed changes in radiation safety regulations; interprets and applies relevant laws and regulations.
  • Performs periodic pick up, transportation, segregation, and processing of RAM waste. Maintains storage areas, equipment, and personal protective equipment related to radioactive materials and RAM waste.
  • Performs receipt of radioactive packages, including initial inspection and survey of radioactive packages, documents survey results per licensing requirements and notifies Radiation Safety Officer if any abnormal results, and delivers radioactive packages to designated RAM laboratories.
  • Perform radiation and contamination surveys. Operate portable radiation and contamination survey instruments, as well as operate radiological counting instruments.
  • Performs radiation safety preparations in support of clinical radiopharmaceutical therapies (i.e., thyroid ablations, MIBG therapies); Performs monitoring of patient rooms when designated as a radiological area for the control of exposures from internal and external sources of radiation; performs decontamination of patient rooms following clinical radiopharmaceutical therapies to eliminate any sources of radiation and to return the room to clinical use.
  • Performs the collection, correlation, and dissemination of safety data; maintains detailed records of audits, bioassay, waste, shipping and receiving of Radioactive Materials (RAM), and instrument calibrations.
  • Prepares/drafts reports and other documentation, including use of relevant scientific data, such as: Reports documenting the results of radiation surveys, incorporating data from radiation sampling and monitoring, and recommending appropriate corrective action.
  • Identifies potential safety hazards, documents identified conditions and takes action to correct identified deficiencies. Prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations to the Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Assists in preparing for and responding to emergencies including hazardous materials incidents and incidents involving radiation. Participates in emergency drills including fire drills. Individual may be on-call or emergency situations may require the individual to respond at times outside of set work schedule.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
