Job Description
Virginia Tech is seeking an Associate Data and Analytics Engineer to support the development, maintenance, and operation of enterprise data, analytics, and reporting solutions that enable institutional reporting, decision support, and data-informed decision-making across the university.
Working under the guidance of senior data and analytics professionals, this position will assist with developing data pipelines, supporting cloud-based data platforms, maintaining enterprise data assets, and creating reports, dashboards, and analytical solutions. The position provides an early-career professional with opportunities to develop proficiency in enterprise data management, analytics engineering, business intelligence, and cloud data platform operations using technologies such as Snowflake, AWS, SQL, Python, and Power BI.

Key Responsibilities
• Support the day-to-day operation of enterprise data and analytics platforms, including monitoring scheduled jobs, data pipelines, reports, dashboards, and platform services.
• Assist with troubleshooting data quality, integration, performance, and platform issues, escalating complex matters to senior team members as appropriate.
• Participate in incident response, issue resolution, service restoration, monitoring, alerting, and operational automation activities.
• Assist in developing, maintaining, testing, and monitoring data pipelines, integrations, and ETL/ELT workflows supporting Snowflake-based analytics solutions.
• Support the creation and maintenance of enterprise data assets, data models, and transformations used for institutional reporting and analytics.
• Develop SQL queries and scripts for data processing, reporting, analytics, validation, and operational needs.
• Perform data validation, testing, reconciliation, and quality assurance to support the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of enterprise data.
• Apply established data governance, metadata, data quality, security, privacy, and access-control standards and practices.
• Assist with developing and maintaining dashboards, reports, visualizations, and self-service analytics solutions using approved enterprise tools.
• Work with business and technical staff to understand reporting and analytics requirements and participate in report validation, user testing, and solution implementation.
• Provide customer support and guidance related to enterprise reporting and analytics services.
• Contribute to technical documentation, operational procedures, training materials, user adoption, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Business, Data Analytics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Foundational knowledge of data management, reporting, analytics, or business intelligence concepts.
• Experience writing scripts, version control (GIT) and the development life cycle.
• Experience developing SQL queries and working with relational databases.
• Experience supporting software applications, data solutions, reporting systems, or analytics platforms through coursework, internships, student employment, or professional experience.
• Ability to learn new technologies, business processes, and technical concepts.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts and information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to organize work, manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing business needs, and complete assigned responsibilities within established timelines.
Preferred Qualifications
• Exposure to cloud data platforms such as Snowflake or comparable technologies.
• Experience with a code release process (DevOps)
• Experience developing reports, dashboards, or data visualizations.
• Exposure to Python, automation, or data processing workflows.
• Familiarity with ETL/ELT, data modeling, data warehousing, or analytics engineering concepts.
• Experience with reporting or BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, MicroStrategy, or similar platforms.
• Experience gained through internships, assistantships, capstone projects, student employment, or professional work.
• Familiarity with higher education data domains or enterprise administrative systems.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, stakeholders and data stewards, while completing assigned work with appropriate guidance.
