What is an associate curator?

Associate Curators are museum or gallery professionals responsible for assisting in the development, organization, and management of collections and exhibitions. They work closely with senior curators to research, acquire, and interpret objects or artworks, and may also help design and implement educational programs. Their role often involves cataloging items, preparing materials for display, and collaborating with other departments to enhance the visitor experience. Associate Curators are typically early- to mid-career professionals who contribute to both the scholarly and practical aspects of a museum or gallery’s mission.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate curator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Curator, you need a solid background in art history or a related field, often supported by a master's degree and prior museum experience. Familiarity with collection management systems, exhibition planning software, and research databases is typically required. Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills help you coordinate exhibitions and engage diverse audiences. These competencies ensure effective stewardship of collections, successful programming, and enhanced visitor experiences.

What are some typical challenges faced by an associate curator when developing new exhibitions?

Associate Curators often navigate challenges such as balancing scholarly research with audience engagement, managing tight deadlines, and coordinating with multiple departments like education, marketing, and installation teams. They must ensure that the exhibition aligns with the institution's mission and collection strengths while also appealing to a diverse audience. Additionally, Associate Curators regularly collaborate with artists, lenders, and conservators, which requires strong communication and organizational skills.

While both roles work closely within museums, the Associate Curator emphasizes research and exhibition planning, whereas the Collections Manager concentrates on collection care and logistics.

Do I need a degree to be an associate curator?

An associate curator typically benefits from a bachelor's degree in art history, museum studies, or a related field, though requirements can vary by employer. Relevant experience, internships, and knowledge of collections management are also important for this role.

Is an associate curator higher than an assistant curator?

Yes, an associate curator is generally higher than an assistant curator. The associate curator typically has more experience, responsibilities, and authority in managing collections and exhibitions, while the assistant curator supports these tasks and often is earlier in their career. Career progression usually moves from assistant to associate to senior or chief curator roles.

Job description

Manager, Curation (Onsite - 5 days per week)

Overview:

Curation is the cornerstone of on-platform operations at Weedmaps, responsible for driving data accuracy and maintaining product listings across our platform ecosystem. The Manager of Curation will step into a structured operational framework to maintain execution standards, optimize existing workflows, and maintain a high performing culture. This multi-faceted role focuses on day-to-day data management, cross-functional triage, and coaching a pod-based team of 30+ data entry associates, across multiple locations. Success in this position means driving output within clean, established systems, partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to improve tooling and triage, and closing performance deltas across the team.

The impact you'll make:

  • Maintain and utilize established data dashboards (e.g., Sigma, Tableau, operational trackers) to monitor velocity, analyze performance trends, and execute routine management callouts.
  • Oversee case prioritization and workload distribution based on leadership initiatives and client requests, keeping tracking systems updated and guiding supervisors on execution.
  • Maintain, audit, and continuously refresh Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and documentation to keep team processes clear and current.
  • Act as the operational liaison to the product team, triaging tooling suggestions, managing data discrepancies, and ensuring new updates actively improve curation efficiency.
  • Partner with sales and revenue teams to triage daily client requests, performing root-cause analysis to resolve issues swiftly and prevent upstream repeat issues.
  • Maintain quality standards by continuously auditing workflows and standardizing execution across all intake types.
  • Guide the team through case-by-case catalog nuances using clear judgment while maintaining standardized workflow execution.
  • Directly supervise an established team of exempt supervisor(s) and non-exempt remote and onsite data entry associates organized into geographic pods.
  • Lead ongoing recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and regular 1:1 performance evaluations.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and performance visibility to help bottom performers reach team standards while retaining valuable domain knowledge.
  • Monitor associate capacity and output data to ensure full time utilization and maximize overall team velocity.

What you've accomplished:

  • 2+ years of experience leading or supervising operations, catalog management, or technical support teams.
  • 1+ year of workforce management experience (scheduling, coaching, forecasting, and performance tracking).
  • Demonstrated experience stepping into existing operational environments, maintaining data dashboards (e.g., Sigma, Tableau, advanced spreadsheets), and driving incremental process improvements.
  • Strong analytical skills with a focus on root-cause analysis, practical problem-solving, and managing nuanced rule sets.
  • Foundational understanding of basic machine learning principles, automated data workflows, and AI-assisted tooling.
  • Proven cross-functional skills, specifically in triaging sales support requests and communicating operational needs to product/engineering teams.
  • Experience writing, updating, and enforcing standardized operating procedures (SOPs).
  • BA Degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong planning, analytical and organizational skills

Bonus points:

  • Previous cannabis industry experience
  • Salesforce experience

The base pay range for this position is $72,100 - $90,773 per year, and a competitive bonus
