Position Summary:

The primary responsibilities of the full-time position as Principal Faculty within the Department of Physician Assistant Studies are teaching, evaluation, advising, service, and scholarship. Additional duties required of the Director of Clinical Education (DCE) include the development and maintenance of clinical affiliates and clinical student assessment.

Faculty Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic instruction, counseling, and advising to students in the didactic and clinical phases of the program

  • Evaluate student performance in didactic courses, clinical courses, and simulations through written and practical examination

  • Assist the program in curricular improvement

  • Participate in peer evaluation, faculty/staff meetings, conference attendance, and other professional development activities

  • Identify and discuss any students considered "at-risk" with the Associate Program Director and Program Director

  • Participate in tutorial and remediation processes

  • Participate in the student admission and applicant interview process

  • Actively assist in the maintenance of ARC-PA accreditation and program improvement

  • Active involvement in carrying out the mission and vision of the program and university

  • Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations

  • Engage in scholarly activity and service to the program, University, and the profession

  • Participate in faculty development and research within the mission of the program and the university

  • Principal faculty responsibilities can vary to some degree based upon the needs of the department

  • Principal faculty will report to the Program Director

  • Principal faculty are permitted to work clinically one day per week and retain any compensation.

Additional Responsibilities:

The Director of Clinical Education works closely with the Program Director and is responsible for:

  • Oversee all aspects of the clinical phase of the PA program

  • Develop, maintain, and assess clinical sites with the assistance of the distant campus Clinical Coordinator

  • Organize student clinical placement into Supervised Clinical Practical Experiences (SCPE) on the Wingate campus and provide oversight of placement on the distant campus

  • Serve as Co-Course Director for clinical courses

  • Lead/Assist with EOR activities (exams, workshops, clinical skills assessment, elective case presentations, etc.)

  • Lead grading of SCPE-specific documentation and review of EOR documents such as RGE (rotation goals and expectation forms)

  • Serve as lead manager of SCPE software (Exxat) to enter new clinicalsites, preceptors, preceptor-specific documents, and affiliation agreements.

  • Perform site/student visits

  • Lead the creation and revision of clinicalyear handbooks (preceptor/student), rubrics, and clinical syllabi

  • Lead the distribution/collection of evaluations and clinical year data analysis

  • Support the Program Director in the ARC-PA accreditation process

  • Clinical department duties should account for 60-80% of time, with the remainder dedicated to didactic teaching/facilitating

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's prepared Physician Assistant from a regionally accredited institution

  • Current NCCPA certification

  • Current unrestricted North Carolina PA licensure or eligible to obtain within six months

  • Minimum of three years of clinical practice experience required

  • Previous teaching experience in a formal physician assistant program or other graduate medical education program is preferred

  • Strong interpersonal abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, preceptors, clinical site staff, and organizational administrators.

  • Honesty, integrity, and commitment to maintaining high professional standards

  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally to distant campus (Hendersonville, 150 miles) and local clinical sites, with travel reimbursement.
