What is an associate content strategist?

An Associate Content Strategist is an entry- to mid-level professional who helps plan, develop, and manage content across digital platforms to support a company’s business objectives. They assist in researching target audiences, analyzing content performance, and coordinating with writers, designers, and marketing teams to ensure consistency and effectiveness. This role typically involves tasks such as creating content calendars, optimizing content for SEO, and contributing to content strategy development under the guidance of senior strategists.

What are some common challenges faced by associate content strategists when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Associate Content Strategists often work closely with designers, marketers, product managers, and developers to create cohesive content experiences. One common challenge is ensuring clear and consistent communication among all team members, as priorities and timelines may vary between departments. Balancing stakeholder input while maintaining the integrity of the content strategy can also require strong negotiation and organizational skills. Proactively seeking feedback, setting clear expectations, and using collaborative tools are key strategies for overcoming these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate content strategist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Content Strategist, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, typically supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools like Google Analytics, and basic graphic design software is often required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across teams are crucial soft skills for success. These abilities ensure that content strategies are effectively developed and executed to engage target audiences and achieve business objectives.

They are strategic, self-directed, and comfortable collaborating with executives, subject matter experts, external partners, and cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Identify the right audiences, channels, partners, and formats for each initiative.

  • Repurpose existing content into social posts, videos, executive thought leadership, partner content, and other external formats.

  • Collaborate with social channel leaders and our internal creative agency to develop organic content for LinkedIn, YouTube, and other platforms.

  • Build strong partnerships with Liberty Mutual's Public Relations team and other communications and marketing partners to identify opportunities where content, research, and subject matter expertise can support enterprise priorities while advancing product visibility, brand authority, and organic discoverability.

  • Identify opportunities to elevate Liberty Mutual executives and subject matter experts through thought leadership, external publications, and social media.

Improve discoverability and performance

  • Apply an understanding of SEO, large language models (LLMs), and AI search experiences to identify the external sources that influence how Liberty Mutual is discovered, referenced, and cited across traditional search and AI-powered experiences.

  • Partner with Analytics partners to measure reach, engagement, referral traffic, links, external citations, citation share of voice, video performance, AI visibility, and related business outcomes.

  • Monitor competitor activity, emerging platforms, and changes in search, social, video, and AI discovery to identify new growth opportunities.

Preferred skills and experience

  • 5-7+ years of experience in content marketing, digital public relations, communications, or a related field.

  • Agency or comparable in-house experience leading content amplification, external distribution, or digital PR initiatives.

  • Experience with offsite content placement, earned media, authority-building, or link-earning programs.

  • Writing and editing skills across articles, social content, executive communications, and video scripts.

  • Experience developing integrated content strategies across social, video, editorial, and third-party channels.

  • Working knowledge of SEO, AI search, and how authoritative mentions and citations influence discoverability.

  • Familiarity with AI visibility or citation-tracking platforms is a plus.

  • Experience managing agencies, vendors, or production partners.

  • Strong project management, presentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

  • Experience working in a large, matrixed, or highly regulated organization is preferred.
