Job description

Clinical Neuroimmunology & Multiple Sclerosis Fellowship Opportunity

Fellowship Duration:

  • Clinician Track: 1 year
  • Clinician-Scientist Track: 3 years
Clinical and Research Activities

Our organization’s Multiple Sclerosis Center is recognized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) as a comprehensive care facility and is an active participant in the Consortium of MS Centers. We deliver extensive, multidisciplinary care to a varied patient population experiencing a wide array of clinical neuroimmunology conditions.

The MS Center is staffed by eight MS specialists (MD, DO, PA-C, NP), three clinician-scientists, and two psychiatrists, supported by a dedicated team of nurses, clinical support personnel, and research staff. Situated within the UPMC Magee-Women's Hospital, the center features an outpatient clinic and a fully integrated 10-bed infusion unit. Patients have the opportunity to engage in clinical trials and a long-term prospective cohort study aimed at advancing precision medicine in MS.

Each fellow will collaborate with faculty to create a tailored training program that encompasses MS and clinical neuroimmunology patient care, exposure to multidisciplinary approaches, didactic sessions, and opportunities for teaching and research.

Clinical Responsibilities

The primary clinical setting for the fellowship will be the outpatient clinic at the Multiple Sclerosis Center. In addition to this, fellows will occasionally provide consultations for complex neuroimmunology cases in the inpatient environment. There is no expectation for fellows to be on call during evenings or weekends.

Additional clinical experiences will include:

  • Neurorehabilitation
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Neuropsychiatry
  • Neuro-urology
  • Neuro-gastroenterology
  • Neuro-rheumatology
  • Pediatric Neuroimmunology
  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Neuro-otology
  • Women's Neurology
  • Multidisciplinary Autoimmune Encephalitis Clinic
Research Opportunities

Fellows enrolled in the clinician-scientist track will engage in research under faculty guidance, focusing on one of three research areas:

  • Clinical Research: Involves clinical trials, epidemiology, and observational studies.
  • Translational Research: Focuses on biomarkers, genetic studies, or pilot studies for innovative diagnostic or treatment methods.
  • Data Research: Includes neuroimaging studies and the application of biostatistics, machine learning, and other computational techniques to clinical and translational research data.
Educational Components

Scheduled educational activities will include:

  • Biweekly neuroimmunology/neuroradiology case conferences
  • Monthly combined adult and pediatric neuroimmunology conferences
  • Monthly journal clubs
  • Weekly case discussions
  • Additional educational events within the MS Center

Fellows will have the chance to present at a national or international conference related to MS or neuroimmunology (e.g., ACTRIMS Forum, ECTRIMS, or CMSC) and will also have opportunities to teach residents and medical students.

Application Timeline

For application details, please refer to the SF Match website. Applications should be submitted during the third year of residency, with a start date of July 1 in the fifth year for adult neurology residents.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have successfully completed an accredited adult neurology residency program (or its equivalent) in the United States or Canada. They should have applied for and received an unrestricted medical license in Pennsylvania and completed the necessary credentialing before the fellowship begins. Please note that we do not sponsor visas at this time.
