Appian is looking for an Associate Application Engineer to develop large-scale applications that support internal Appian employees around the world. In this role, you will design and build custom applications with embedded AI that solve real-world problems for internal business stakeholders. This is a rare launchpad for an ambitious technologist to master Enterprise-Grade Systems, collaborate directly with corporate leadership, and see the immediate impact of their software on a global scale.

This role is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Appian was built on a culture of in-person collaboration, which we believe is a key driver of our mission to be the best. What You'll Do

  • Build and deploy custom internal applications featuring advanced business logic, automated workflows, and embedded AI capabilities.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional internal departments to translate operational challenges into high-performing technical solutions.

  • Design clean, scalable architecture and integrate complex data structures utilizing foundational concepts in Data Modeling.

  • Partner with senior engineers to continuously optimize internal system performance, security, and UI/UX design.

  • Participate in agile development cycles, active code reviews, and collaborative brainstorming sessions to drive internal digital transformation.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Information Systems, Data Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Math, other STEM-related fields with a strong academic record

  • Experience: Prior experience in a professional, academic, or technical setting (includes internships, research, capstones, or consistent part-time/full-time employment).

  • Communication: Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate in a professional environment and to bridge the gap between technical concepts and business needs.

  • Technical Skills: Academic background or experience demonstrating coding exposure with programming languages such as SQL, Java, Python, C#, or JavaScript.

  • AI Skills: Proven fluency in AI and LLMs, encompassing both the strategic development of AI-powered platform capabilities and the hands-on application of AI tools to accelerate daily workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership experience (e.g. executive roles in student organizations, club leadership, or captaincy of team-based activities).

  • An eager, self-starting mindset passionate about learning AI-Powered Process Automation.
