What does an associate accounting manager do?

An Associate Accounting Manager assists in overseeing the daily operations of an organization's accounting department. Their responsibilities typically include managing accounting staff, preparing financial reports, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and supporting audits. They also help implement accounting policies and procedures, reconcile accounts, and collaborate with other departments to maintain accurate financial records. This role is often a stepping stone to more senior management positions within the finance department.

What are some typical challenges faced by an associate accounting manager when supervising junior team members?

As an Associate Accounting Manager, one common challenge is balancing your own workload with the responsibility of guiding and reviewing the work of junior staff. Ensuring accuracy and compliance in their output while providing constructive feedback can be demanding, especially during busy periods like month-end or year-end close. Developing effective communication and mentoring skills is essential to help team members grow while maintaining high standards for financial reporting and deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate accounting manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Accounting Manager, you need a solid understanding of financial reporting, accounting principles, and typically a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance along with experience in the field. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and often a CPA or similar certification are highly valued. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you manage teams and collaborate across departments. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate financial management, regulatory compliance, and the successful coordination of accounting functions.

Job description

Senior Fund Accountant ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Fund Accountant owns the accounting process for an assigned portfolio of funds — exercising independent judgment, reviewing junior work, and mentoring Associates along the way. This is a role for someone ready to take real ownership, not just execute a checklist.

ABOUT ACUITY

Acuity Fund Solutions is a fund administration firm serving private equity, venture capital, real estate, private credit, hedge fund, and family office clients. Built from the ground up for accuracy and responsiveness, Acuity gives fund managers a back office they can rely on without building one in-house.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Own the end-to-end accounting and reporting process for an assigned portfolio of funds, working directly with the Fund Accounting Manager to set priorities and timelines
  • Review reconciliations, transaction processing, and supporting schedules prepared by Associates, resolving discrepancies using independent judgment rather than escalating routine variances
  • Determine when a variance requires escalation to the Fund Accounting Manager versus resolution at your level
  • Prepare investor statements and fund-level financial statements for Manager review and final sign-off
  • Serve as a working point of contact for client questions on assigned funds
  • Identify recurring process gaps or errors and recommend improvements rather than working around them
  • Mentor and provide day-to-day guidance to Associate Fund Accountants
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 3+ years of fund accounting or fund administration experience
  • Demonstrated experience independently resolving reconciliation discrepancies and reviewing junior work
  • Strong Excel skills and sound judgment on when a variance is routine versus significant
NICE TO HAVE
  • Hands-on experience with Allvue, Investran, or Advent Geneva
  • Experience across multiple fund structures
  • CPA license or active progress toward one
  • Prior mentoring experience
WHAT ACUITY OFFERS
  • Hybrid work arrangement based in Scottsdale, AZ
  • Paid time off that grows with tenure, plus separate paid sick leave
  • Company holidays aligned to the market calendar, with flexible holiday scheduling
  • Industry-leading paid parental leave
  • A firm small enough that your work is visible, with a defined path for growth

Equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status.
