Required CredentialsJuris Doctor (JD), Bar AdmissionAssociate's degree or paralegal certificate
Work EnvironmentLaw firms, corporate legal departments, courtsLaw firms, legal departments, courts
Job ResponsibilitiesLegal research, client advising, court appearancesLegal research, document preparation, case organization

What does an associate lawyer do?

An associate lawyer is a junior attorney who supports senior lawyers by conducting legal research, drafting documents, and preparing cases. They often handle client communications, attend court proceedings, and develop their legal skills under supervision as they work toward partnership or advancement.

What is the lowest level of an associate lawyer?

The lowest level of an associate lawyer is typically an entry-level position, often called a junior or first-year associate. These lawyers usually have recently graduated from law school and passed the bar exam, working under supervision as they gain experience. Advancement to higher associate levels depends on performance, experience, and firm structure.
