What is an associate 3D artist?

An associate 3D artist is an entry-level or junior professional responsible for creating three-dimensional models, textures, and visual assets using software like Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max. They typically work under supervision in a team environment, developing skills in modeling, texturing, and rendering to support game, film, or animation projects.

Is 3D modeling getting replaced by AI?

3D modeling as a profession is evolving with AI tools that can automate certain tasks, but human expertise remains essential for complex, creative, and detailed work. Associate 3D modelers often use software like Blender or Maya, and understanding AI-assisted features can enhance productivity, though full replacement is unlikely in the near term.

Is 3D modeling a high paying job?

Associate 3D modelers can earn competitive salaries, especially with experience, specialized skills, and proficiency in tools like Maya or Blender. Salaries vary by industry, location, and level of expertise, but skilled 3D modelers often have strong earning potential in fields such as gaming, film, and product design.

Is 3D modeling still in demand?

3D modeling remains in demand across industries such as gaming, film, architecture, and product design. Skilled 3D modelers who are proficient with tools like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max and have a strong portfolio are sought after as companies continue to produce digital content and visualizations.

What is the difference between Associate 3D Modeling vs 3D Artist?

The Role

This Mechanical Designer (MEP) is responsible for developing, managing, and coordinating mechanical system designs and construction documentation for building and infrastructure projects. This role will assist in mechanical BIM/CAD efforts, ensures alignment with engineering calculations and design intent, and supports multi-disciplinary coordination across MEP and architectural teams. The position requires independent execution of advanced modeling tasks, close collaboration with mechanical engineers, and mentorship of junior designers to deliver high-quality, code-compliant mechanical system documents.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed mechanical 2D and 3D CAD/BIM models (e.g., HVAC systems, ductwork layouts, piping systems, equipment schedules, and details) aligned with engineering calculations and specifications.
  • Perform and oversee quality control reviews of mechanical drawings and models, verifying accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable building codes, energy standards, and project requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers to translate load calculations, system sizing, airflow design, and equipment selections into accurate, constructible documents.
  • Generate and manage mechanical construction documents, including general notes, equipment schedules, riser diagrams, and detailed system layouts.
  • Support shop drawing reviews, RFIs, and design revisions by incorporating engineering updates into BIM/CAD models and drawing sets.
  • Establish and maintain mechanical BIM standards, including model organization, naming conventions, and level of development (LOD).
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving complex modeling or coordination issues, while identifying process improvements for MEP BIM workflows.
  • Prepare 3D visualizations, system diagrams, and coordination views for constructability reviews, internal coordination meetings, and client presentations.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate’s degree or certification in CAD, BIM, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • 4–6 years of experience in CAD/BIM design with a focus on mechanical or MEP systems within building projects.
  • Demonstrated experience producing mechanical construction documents and coordinating with engineering and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in MEP-focused design tools (e.g., Revit MEP, AutoCAD, Navisworks) and familiarity with applicable building and energy codes.
