Wharton-Smith, Inc., a highly regarded General Contractor throughout the Southeast, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Project Manager. We are currently seeking someone who is willing to work in our corporate office in Sanford, FL.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Project Manager supports the Project Manager in the planning, coordination, administration, and execution of construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. This role serves as a transitional leadership position focused on developing operational management, financial oversight, contract administration, and client coordination skills while assisting with overall project performance.

The Assistant Project Manager plays an active role in project budgeting, scheduling, procurement, subcontractor coordination, and change management while supporting communication between office and field operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with project budgeting, cost tracking, forecasting, and financial reporting activities.
  • Support development, maintenance, and monitoring of project schedules and production plans.
  • Assist with owner billings, subcontractor pay applications, and project cost management processes.
  • Coordinate subcontract agreements, purchase orders, procurement activities, and material deliveries.
  • Support management of change orders, extra work authorizations, and contract documentation.
  • Facilitate owner, subcontractor, and internal coordination meetings and maintain meeting records.
  • Monitor submittal, shop drawing, and procurement processes to support project schedules.
  • Coordinate permitting, inspections, startup, testing, commissioning, and closeout activities.
  • Conduct regular jobsite visits to monitor construction progress, quality standards, production planning, and safety performance. Depending on project size and complexity, this role may be assigned to provide full-time on-site project support.
  • Collaborate with Superintendents and field leadership to support operational efficiency and schedule compliance.

  • Independently manage small projects or designated scopes of work, including responsibility for project coordination, financial performance, scheduling, client communication, and successful project execution.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Four (4) to seven (7) years of construction-related experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience supporting project startup and mobilization activities.
  • Ability to develop effective presentations, project-specific write-ups, and qualification packages.
  • Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams and departments.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships and foster a strong team environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and mentoring abilities to support employee growth and development.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate project status, resource needs, and issues with Project Managers, Project Executives, and General Superintendents.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Proficient in CPM scheduling software.
  • Experience with construction management software.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to create professional presentations and project documentation.
  • Computer proficiency is required to support project planning, scheduling, and reporting.
