Preparing for your Class
  • Always to prepared to teach, know your routine
  • Be familiar with your music
  • Perfect cueing skills
  • Begin class on time
  • Emphasize the members workouts, not your own
Responsibilities
  • It is the instructors’ responsibility to take attendance in every class. Please request all members sign-in prior to the start of each class. In the case of premium/specialty programs, the instructor is to follow pre-set attendance procedures.
  • Instructors are to be in the room 5 minutes prior to the start of class.
  • All classes should start and end on time.
  • Any materials used for your class (steps, mats, weights, etc.) must be put back after each class.
  • It is the responsibility of the instructor to find a substitute if they are unable to teach their class. The instructor is then to notify the group exercise coordinator/wellness director of the change.
  • It is the responsibility of all instructors to participate in and support all “Annual Campaign” activities and events.
Evaluations
  • Instructors will be evaluated on a yearly basis
  • Evaluation will be based on:
  • Overall presentation
  • Performance in class
  • Technical aptitude
  • Instructors will also be evaluated on a quarterly basis.
  • Evaluation will be based on customer service expectations.
Class Standards
  • Introduce yourself at the beginning of every class
  • Heart rates should be taken twice during the course of the class
  • Demonstrate modifications, remind participants to modify and encourage individuals to work at their own pace
  • Keep participants moving
  • Instructors must teach according to description of the class
  • With beginner participants:
  • Make them feel comfortable
  • Discuss heart rate ranges
  • Spend time with them on technique, choreography and proper form
Instructor Standards
  • Instructors are required to attend all staff meetings and attend a new employee orientation within 30 days of hire.
  • As employees of the YMCA you are to promote the Y’s programs and services as well other classes offered on the group fitness schedule.
  • Instructors are expected to be courteous to all members and staff
  • Current CPR and AED certifications are required by all staff.
  • Instructors’ certification in AFAA, ACE, ACAM or the YMCA is required.
Service to Members
  • Learn members’ names and use at every opportunity
  • Be available to members
  • Be aware of opportunities to assist members
  • Correct members in a courteous and respectful manner, when exercising incorrectly
  • Be approachable, show sincere interest and enthusiasm
