Job description

Description Oversees and manages the overall daily operations of the summer camp program for children ages 5-11. Serves as the lead on-site supervisor responsible for ensuring a safe, structured, and engaging environment for participants and staff. Provides direct supervision to Summer Program Specialists and Assistants, manages camper accountability and behavior, and serves as the primary point of contact for parents and guardians.

Examples of Duties Oversees all day-to-day operations of summer camp programs and activities across all age groups. Supervises Summer Program Specialists, Assistants, and potential vendors providing leadership, guidance, and support throughout the camp day. Coordinates camper drop-off and pick-up procedures, ensuring proper authorization, safety, and accountability at all times.

Maintains accurate attendance records and ensures proper staff-to-camper ratios are met. Plans, implements, and evaluates camp activities, schedules, field trips, and weekly programming in coordination with program staff. Supports and guides staff in developing lesson plans, leading activities, and maintaining an engaging camp environment.

Promotes an inclusive camp environment by supporting children of all abilities and ensuring appropriate accommodations are implanted when needed. Addresses and manages camper behavior using established policies and procedures; handles escalated behavioral issues and documents incidents as needed. Serves as the primary point of contact for parents and guardians; responds to questions, concerns, and complaints in a professional and timely manner.

Ensures compliance with all department policies, safety procedures, and risk management practices. Monitors camp environments and activities to proactively identify and address safety concerns. Responds to emergencies and follows established emergency procedures.

Maintains program supply levels, assists with equipment oversight, and ensures proper use and storage of materials. Maintains current and accurate records related to camp operations, incidents, and daily reports; provides updates to supervisor. Maintains facility cleanliness and assists with custodial duties as needed.

Serves as a role model and promotes positive behaviors and attitudes while maintaining constructive relationships with participants, staff, and families. Performs other related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required.

College coursework in recreation, education, child development, special education, or related field preferred. Experience working with youth (minimum 2-3 years) required. Previous supervisory or leadership experience required.

Experience working with children of varying abilities and needs preferred. Licenses and/or Certifications: Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia preferred. CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required (or ability to obtain prior to camp start).

Knowledge: General knowledge of physical activity, group games, and arts and crafts. General knowledge of programs and activities appropriate for ages 5-11. Knowledge of behavior management techniques and youth development principles, including inclusive practices and strategies for children of varying abilities.

Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills. Effective problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks.

Abilities: Ability to supervise and lead staff in a team environment. Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff. Ability to maintain positive working relationships with participants, families, and colleagues.

Ability to respond appropriately in high-pressure or emergency situations. Ability to enter, stand, and move in a pool or lake. Supplemental Information Work Environment: Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
