Job description

Description: Transportation/Mechanic II- Classified Position, 240 Days, pay grade (M8-Mechanic II), with hourly rate depending upon relevant work experience.  See Mechanic Salary Schedule at https://www.cartersvilleschools.org/departments/financial-services/salary-schedules

Reports to:  Mechanic I
Job Summary:  To assist in keeping the system's vehicles in such state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

  1. Perform repairs as needed on school system owned vehicles in the shop and on road calls.
  2. Attends in-service and/or workshops designed to improve mechanical skills.
  3. Assist in making annual inspections of all Cartersville City School System buses.
  4. Assists in troubleshooting and repairing gasoline engines, including carburetor and electrical service and electronic ignition.
  5. Assists in troubleshooting and diagnosing diesel engines, making repairs as necessary.
  6. Assists in troubleshooting and repairing braking systems, including air, hydraulic, drum, and disk brakes.
  7. Assists in troubleshooting and repairing drive trains.
  8. Assists in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems including all safety lights and equipment.
  9. Assists in troubleshooting and repairing the mechanical and safety system of system vehicles.
  10. Possesses knowledge of the fuel injection system in order to make repairs as needed.
  11. Understands emission control system in order to make repairs as may be needed.
  12. Obeys all traffic laws and maintains satisfactory driving record.
  13. Performs tasks as mechanic in the preventive maintenance program.
  14. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may, from time to time, be assigned by the Mechanic I.


Qualifications:  High school diploma with training and/or experience in gas and diesel engines; Commercial driver's license required.
